Almost 12,000 soldiers took part in the Soldier Settlement Scheme. It was designed to provide returned men and women with a livelihood on a farm. #OTD in 1925, a Royal Commission was established to inquire into the workings of the scheme. The outcome: there were major defects! Find out more:

The election held Wednesday 16 December 1903 was Australia's second federal election, and the first to allow women to vote! It was also the first to ask the voter to place a mark in a box, rather than cross out names. This probably contributed to over 30,000 informal (not counted) votes!
