Schlieren imaging really feels like magic. You do some fiddly adjustments with a lamp and a camera together right at the focus of a curved mirror, and suddenly the fiddliness becomes sensitive to tiny variations in the air density near the mirror itself. The "oh, wow!" moment for me here was 1/🧪⚛️

Over 15 years ago, we designed our house, and during the construction phase I personally ran co-ax, cat-6 lines, and speaker cables throughout the entire house before the walls went up. It was a fun project, and why not? One benefit was a whole-house audio system that we’ve enjoyed for years.

Here’s a cool example of refraction and Snel’s law. This pool has the same depth throughout, but it looks shallower on the far end! Here are two pictures taken from opposite ends of the pool.

In intro physics the other day, we determined that the acceleration of an object rolling down a ramp is independent the object’s mass and radius. In other words, all disks (or spheres) will have the exact same acceleration. Let’s see if that’s true.

First time I got to see the northern lights, and it didn’t disappoint!

Today's class: Simultaneously measure force and acceleration while pushing and pulling on a (nearly frictionless) cart. The slope (inertial mass) turns out to be equal to the measured (gravitational) mass. How cool is that?
