The main way I see people viewing citations as a pain in the ass is if their research is disorganized (can relate!) or if they’re trying to find work that retrofits a conclusion they made up, which… is a bad and wrong way to go about doing all of this.

The two main reasons I remember painstakingly “hunting for a citation” is when I read a paper and vaguely remembered a point that would strengthen my argument after all, OR if I wasn’t sure I interpreted a citation correctly, which would undermine my argument and make my entire thesis fall apart.

Do people… not get taught how to do research anymore? Citations aren’t difficult; it’s literally the whole thing. You don’t make a single argument unless you have a citation for it. Is this not how people do it anymore???
