I struggle with self-citations. What's the point of writing a supposedly critical paper that clearly is just a vehicle for pointing out that you were right all along? One paper recently had a ref list of about 40 papers, 12 of which came from one of the authors. Am I being too judgy??

All the research says that palliative care is most effective when it's acessed early. The primary care mindset is the opposite of palliative. I want care that acknowledges my terminal illness when managing symptoms, but primary care 'can't' do it & palliative doesn't exist until I'm actually dying.

Listening to an HRC webinar about the changes to research funding. It's striking how little input by academics is valued now - final decisions will be made by HRC, with science committees' input downgraded to 'advice'. Commercialisation is valued. Innovation is not. Depressing.

I just finished a PhD oral exam - another Māori doctor nurse in the house! I couldn't be more delighted. Plus I went to AUT graduation 2 weeks ago to celebrate the students I supervised - 2 PhDs and one Masters. And my amazing daughter is now Dr Tracy Murphy as well. That's a shitload of successes 🥰
