The Public Domain Review

Double page spread from Hamonshu (1903), a Japanese book of wave and ripple designs that would have acted as a kind of go-to guide for Japanese craftsmen looking to adorn their wares with such patterns. See all three volumes of the work here:

The generous cross-hatching is the PERFECT fit for this claustrophobic, hallucinatory horror. So textured and alive that the reader is swept right into the panic and delusion. Halftone over hatching, decade over decade, panel over panel.

Going in I wasn't aware of the setting, and I'm in awe of the research and imagination needed to make something that feels this grounded and specific. Amazing!

It's Friday, AKA "Great Comics Panel" day! Drop yours below! One of my favorite panels of all time. A human figure approaching a "massive complex in which millions live… in a world of distorted visions…"🧵

“Commonplace books […] are essentially such collections of passages which might prove useful later. Since such books helped assure 'copia,' the fluency or free flow of speech […] To copy something is thus in this sense to enter in a commonplace collection of 'copia' for future exploitation.”

This 192-page adaptation was done by an uncredited, unknown artist, and appeared the same year as "It Rhymes with Lust". Dell Comics prided itself on doing family-friendly comics, but this one is clearly aimed at a different audience.

Career Shoplifter by Gabrielle Bell
Gabrielle concludes that she is a failure in life, so she might as well do what she likes for the rest of it. She spends hours at cafes covertly drawing and eavesdropping on her fellow layabouts and shirkers every day. Occasionally she gets caught, and sometimes, she makes friends. Being a failure can be a lot of fun.
