I feel like we need a word to differentiate "indie games" made by studios that sell millions of copies, and "indie games" made by a handful of people who will be lucky if they ever get a thousand sales.

#PitchYaGame sillinder's somewhat uneventful tuesday is a pseudo3D platformer that follows a silly robot that can hit their head in very beneficial ways, bouncing and sliding through a surreal and cheap landscape filled with unreasonable people (unlike sillinder) sillinder does this every day.

Critter roguelike thread: I'm going to be posting smaller updates here to avoid cluttering my entire timeline with them.

Alright, some people wanted to see the early stages, so here we go. Real-time critter combat, where you don't control your critter directly, but instead give it orders and lead it around the stage.

I love how a lot of the things I learned while making a fighting game are translating to my experience creating a roguelike. There are abandoned or unfinished projects, but there's no such thing as wasted time. Everything you learn makes you grow and that's fucking awesome.

alright, here's some early design stuff. none of it is final at this stage and I'm especially going back and forth on how I want to handle colors for the project as a whole. that said, enjoy my first attempt at a critter evolution line!

quick question, no wrong answers: do you prefer it when the gamedev people you follow share only relatively polished previews, or do you actively want to see the early steps of a project and its many iterations?

so tempting to skip prototyping and go straight into making a ton of art. but. I'll be strong and stick with making the game fun with only colored squares and placeholders first.

Maybe art shouldn't be something you scroll past on a timeline. I think you should have to click a link and go to a website. We value art when it's on a museum wall because it is inconvenient to get there and look at it. Art on a timeline is too easy and we lose respect for it. Art deserves better.

does anyone know any platform/sidescrolling games where 1- the player character is able to fly and 2- flying actually feels good? in the ones I can think of flying tends to feel pretty awkward compared to the usual platforming experience.

I spend so much time starting projects that require weeks before I can even show them, months if not longer to finish, with dozens or even hundreds of animation frames for every character. So it was nice to take a break from that and finish something in a day and a half, without animating anything.

when I think I have done every animation for this character. I have not. there are more animations. there's always something to animate. I like animating but I would like to move on to other characters sometime this century if at all possible.

I'm working on a traditional fighting game but the platform fighter I like is about to release the character I had been waiting for since day one and I'm definitely gonna be sucked back in and be fully platform-brained for the foreseeable future. kinda curious how it'll affect the process.

someone should invent a fighting game that isn't harmful to your hand and wrist health

when you think you're done adding every mechanic you'll need into a fighting game, there's always something else you forgot and will find out in testing or realize when playing another game. but honestly, it's a pretty fun process. very cool type of game to make.

Everyone who's into fighting games should go wishlist, get the demo, and/or buy the game on itch. I've finally beaten arcade mode yesterday (for all my love of the genre, I'm not actually very good at it), and it was a lot of fun! Great graphics, gameplay, and really cool characters.

on one hand there is a huge variety of fighting game mechanics and if you look hard enough you are guaranteed to find something whose mechanics you would enjoy. on the other hand if you filter out games that portray women in a way that make you uncomfortable, there's like three fighting games.
