4. Over the past five years, the debate has focused on #repurposing #agricultural #support or using it more efficiently. Far less attention has been paid to a more fundamental question: How do we turn off the spigot, once and for all, where trade-distorting domestic support does the most damage?

3. This concentration has serious implications for least-developed countries (LDCs). These are often the very commodities their farmers produce, like #cotton, yet they must compete with producers benefiting from heavily concentrated public support in both developed and major developing countries.

2. But the problem isn't just how much support exists. It’s where it goes. Agricultural support is heavily concentrated in a narrow set of #commodities, including sugar, maize, and rice, many of them high-emission, calorie-dense, or outright unhealthy foods like sugar.

1. 🌍 Global support to #agriculture now exceeds USD 800 billion per year, around 20% higher than before COVID-19, according to @oecd-ocde.bsky.social estimates. Roughly half of this support is channelled into the most distorting and environmentally harmful policies.
