LOL, trying to stay offline and do my work, and friends are sending me "LOOK AT THIS NEW PIC!" texts .... This one is worth it. First PoC and first woman to go around another world. Don't stop talking about this point. It's important.

The IG algorithm finally showed me some positive content — turns out the chefs of some European embassies have been participating in, what seems to be, a cooking challenge in DC 🧑🍳 Norway ⬇️

The news has been more than a bit grim of late, so hooray for
@carbonbrief.org
providing some genuine and really meaningful **good** news: the UK's carbon emissions in 2024 were the lowest since 1872, because demand for fossil fuels just keeps decreasing.

Being a PI is just one of many things you can do with your PhD. And doing *any* of those things is a successful outcome of your training and graduate school time. The fact that a school or lab produces more of one of those things doesn't make it better.

📚A must-read 📚 for academics who are desperately trying to master the day-to-day job demands: Just finished the thought-provoking book “Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals” by Oliver Burkeman. Highly recommended! 🔥

Advice to (junior) academics: please keep some web presence updated (website, Google Scholar, etc.). At several points throughout the year, there are opportunities to nominate you for things, and it is helpful in those nomination processes to be able to point to evidence of your awesomeness.

I'm fascinated by the cognitive dissonance necessary to be "pro-car" and "anti-smoking" so vociferously at the same time. It's almost as if we didn't know that diesel exhaust is carcinogenic. If we put nicotine in petrol, would it change his mind?

This, and despite trying every tip, strategy and lifehack out there, it's a truth I struggle very hard to break free from.
