She’d been quiet today, and yet once Rebecca came home her skin was aglow. “Can’t a girl enjoy herself? You’re so clingy.” The writhing mass on the bed struggled to stand desperate for escape. Rebecca smiled. “You wanted this, remember? It’s ok darling. I’ll finish you off.”

“I love Halloween. Dressing up as the scariest monsters? What’s not to love. What’s my costume? I’m the creature that will drag you away and tear you limb from limb. I’m the monster that will drain your soul and feast on what remains. I guess I didn’t change up from last year…”

“Work is trying to keep me away from indulging in you pretty things, but I will get to you. Each and every one of you.”

“Here comes the sleep. No point fighting it, so hold onto me as I dream. Your flesh will provide such comfort…”

Another night, another bar. Rebecca was on her last drink feeling the warm buzz begin to nip at her vision. “Come on, walk me home. It’s not safe for a lone lady like me.” She smiled that faltering practiced smile. This was too easy. It wasn’t safe for whoever accompanied her.

“Because you’re adorable. You fought so long to be a strong independent creature and instead you’ll end up exactly where you started. But don’t worry. I’ll protect you. I always look after my pets. You’ll feel all the warmth and love I have to give. Doesn’t it just sound perfect, little flower?”

“You know, I’ve always wanted a pet. I see people walking around with their dogs and their cats and they look so happy…don’t you want to make me happy?” Rebecca laughs. Every little whimper and grumble only makes her more excited. “You know you can’t resist the thought of being used as my pet.”

“I’m not going anywhere. I’m not dodging. I’m not defending. I’m just holding you. So squirm all you want. Thrash and nip. Bite and scratch. It won’t change a thing.” Heat, warmth, suffocating intimacy. Rebecca simply smiled with satisfaction. “You’re meant for this; to be taken, used. Ok dear?”

“You’re shaking.” Rebecca smirked, she let out a small exhale. Just enough to breathe against Dusk’s ear. A reminder of how close she was. “I thought you were a big brave brute. What happened?” She pulled Dusk into an embrace. It felt stifling. “What will the little monster do now…?”

“No need to be embarrassed. It isn’t right that this form of expression is new to you, it’s clear you should be loved and respected and cherished and oh so many things.” Rebecca smiled, and leaned closer. Her lips were inches from Dusk’s ear. “So, should I still crush you? Or will you be nice?”

Rebecca nodded slowly, feeling the automatic flexing of Dusk’s hand. “I know, I know. It’s hard to contain the feeling sometimes. You just want to shout and tear and slash and all you really need is to breathe and relax.” She placed both hands on Dusk’s now, holding it gently. “Feeling better?”

“Dusk. What a cute…” Rebecca paused, smiling politely. “Excuse me. What a strong name. See how much better this is? No need for violence. No need for scrapping and fighting. Just one little touch.” She squeezed Dusk’s hand, softly, carefully. It was as if she was testing it. Exploring it.

Rebecca smiled. She crouched down, making herself only slightly shorter. “Listen dear, you can go down that route and get squashed like a bug. Or you can take a deep breath, calm yourself, and we can talk like normal people.” She extended her hand. “I’m Rebecca. And you are?”

“Oh goodness me…it’s just so cute.” Rebecca laughed, almost losing her composure. It took her longer than usual to relax back into her practiced, measured pose. “Please, shred my skin and make me regret I ever crossed the mighty tiny creature. Do you want me to kneel so you can reach my face?”

“Confidence from such a small thing as you is sweet. Almost pitiable. I’m afraid however that the word which comes to mind when looking at you isn’t “fear” or “terror” or even “threat”. You are simply “adorable”…”

“One of these days I’ll be gone, perhaps driving down a road far from here, and my only memory of you will be a touch. A kiss. A look in the eyes. Isn’t that the best we can all hope for, darling?”

It was morning, barely. She was still in the same elegant dress as the night before, eyes hollow from the lack of sleep. But she was fed, she was happy, was content. “It’s such a waste to go home now.” Rebecca looked around at the people scurrying about. She licked her lips.

“You should see the other guy. What’s left of him at least.” Rebecca took a drag and blew smoke into the frigid night air. She licked at the residue still on her lips. “They hide the nicest flavours under all those layers, it takes ages to get through to it. How about desert?”

“Are you lost?” Another voice always echoed in the din, just loud enough to break Rebecca’s concentration. Another straggler looking for a chance. Another stray with nothing better to do. “If you want to go down this road, I’ll join you. But don’t think the way back is easy…”

The elegance served two purposes. It was for her as much as it was for them, a lure as much as an expression of her own confidence. Rebecca enjoyed the eyes on her. It made it easier to plant eyes on them. “Which will it be tonight” she muttered. She fancied a decadent meal…

“Isn’t it so much nicer in the fresh evening air? Better than some stuffy dive bar.” The moist fallen leaves left dents in their footfalls, every step deeper into the strange grey darkness. Rebecca made sure to keep an eye on them. “Don’t worry about a thing. I’ve got you…”

“Guess who’s back…”

“Aren’t you tired of being tired?” Rebecca’s breath came out with a shaking start, a quick suck of the cigarette masking the unease. “It’s exhausting. It’s endless. It’s incessant.” She looked up, the hint of a smile playing on her lips. “Let’s be awake together.”

“All work and no play, I bet that’s what you think of me. I get it. The truth is, I like the work. It feels good to build up to something special.” Rebecca leaned closer. She smiled. “Playtime is better once you put in the effort. I should show you. You’d make an excellent project.”

“What’s a girl to do, I wonder. I can’t let you go, but you don’t deserve to have me. I know it isn’t fair but that doesn’t concern me.” Rebecca felt her skin blush. This was rare. It was pleasant. “Maybe just once. And then at least we’ll know what it feels like to be loved.”

The heat was unbearable. Rebecca noticed others watching her as she melted in the unforgiving swelter. “You could fan me if you wanted. Or get me a drink, something overflowing with ice.” Her smile faltered, sweat smudging her makeup. “Just imagine how warm our night will be…”

“It has a habit of creeping up on you, the temptation.” Rebecca lounged, her back arched, staring up at the ceiling. She knew eye contact wasn’t needed. This one was all hers. “It’s like your mind trying to persuade your body. Or the other way around. Both lose in the end.”

Heat only served to fuel her hunger. It sped up her metabolism, making one meal less filling and another always necessary. She’d hold back her drooling, ravenous nature. She displayed nothing of the fire within. Rebecca watched and waited. “Hey, stranger. Going my way?”

“Just another face…” Rebecca swirled her glass and watched the liquid churn and slosh against the rim. Her eyes floated across the room and saw nothing but future conquests. She thought some of these pretty features would look good on a missing person poster. “Who’s next?”

“It takes me a few days to settle in I think. Got to see the sights and meet the people.” Rebecca flashed her practiced smile. It was always too easy after first moving in. All the neighbours thought they had a chance with her. “Care to stop by tonight for a drink?” It was a meal she was after…

Rebecca had grand ideas. Thoughts of change, of renewal, of becoming something more than she was. Escaping wasn’t always a bad thing after all. But she knew it wouldn’t last. “I’m not broken. Why fix me?” She couldn’t deny the taste of flesh and souls. It gave her purpose.

Things fell apart in her last place. Too many missing, too much frenzy. Rebecca had let herself go. “I can’t help it. It just sort of sneaks up on me, you know?” She’d cut back. A fresh start. Hunger remained constant. Her eyes darted from meat to meat, lips wet and quivering.

Rumour spread of a new tenant, a surprising development given how expensive the apartment was listed. After the moving van departed, and the scent of fresh flat pack furniture settled, Rebecca watched the city from her window. “Guess who’s back?” She smiled.

“It’s tricky, trying to capture you all at once. Everything you do conflicts with the other. There’s no way I’ll have all of you, is there? So maybe a targeted approach. One at a time. Souls are much nicer when spread out and separate. Who will be breakfast? Who will be dinner…”

“There’s nobody else. Just you, me, and the space between.” Languid didn’t even begin to describe Rebecca today. Under the sun she became almost fluid, every movement elongated to display herself as favourably as possible. “Let’s remove the space, dear. Let’s come together.”

“I don’t know why people smoke after it’s done. Maybe it’s about chasing the high…letting the taste of a morsel like you melt into the tongue. Either way, it’s a habit.”
