Side note: Seattle at that time was a hotbed for strikes, radicalism and worker-led socialism, and the strike illustrates how effectively they could use socialist-style organization to keep people fed and essential services running. It was a highly coordinated effort involving hundreds of people.

Government officials used the strike as a pretext for the first Red Scare, leading to raids on labor halls and the arrests of radicals. However, it remains a landmark event in labor history for demonstrating that workers could successfully manage a large city’s essential services independently. /end
