Christian, chemist, spacecraft enjoyer. He/Him
I sporadically see his posts from time to time still Today included a particular amusing pair: > 'Is Obama the antichrist' conspiracy video > Extremely incorrect biblical history Space Twitter has been infested with nazis for a while but unfortunately I know the Apollo era folks aren't much better

People often say Lucas stole the idea of the Jedi from the Lensman books, but they aren't that similar at all so far

Was reading the wikipedia page on plate tectonics because I was bored. Turns out the primary force moving plates isn't mantle convections, but ridges pushing plates away. It also might be subduction pulling plates around. We don't actually entirely know

Kinda nuts that yesterday the BBC started a police officer racism scandal and then today everyone was praising the response to the terrorist attack. To be fair 7 minutes from first 999 call to attacker dead is crazy fast

Over the last week a large chunk of my twitter feed has turned into kind of conservative-christian-new-mom-posting-about-babies/pregnancy/parenting and it's extremely weird considering I'm male, single, and not conservative.

I think it's kinda funny that my technique of rectifying FTL travel in movies not violating causality by simply deciding that this universe does not have relativity at all works extremely well because it fixes everything without changing anything else in the story

Prior to these three I read Nightfall, which was voted as the best scifi story ever written in 1968. Nightfall was Isaac Asimov's breakout work, and almost 50 years later was expanded into a full novel.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was a watershed moment in history. The very concept of a nation was never the same again. The election of Donald Trump to the US presidency was a moment of similar significance. The world is changed forever.

I saw another quote tweet about this song where they expressed how utterly unsubtle the lyrics are. Then it occurred to me that right wingers have ZERO media literacy, so there is no way to hide a violent message in subtext, it has to be plainly stated.

Why am I just now finding out that the War of the Worlds film that came out this year had aliens edited on top of footage of terrorism, tragedies and real war destruction?

Casual reminder that multiple ancient stories refer to the Pleiades star cluster as being 7 sisters, but today Pleione is too close to Atlas to see them as separate stars with the naked eye, leaving only 6 visible stars. The last time they were far enough apart was 100,000 years ago.

Reading about old sci-fi authors and how they started. It's like a glimpse into an entirely different world. Ray Bradbury, getting paid 2 years rent upfront to write full time based on one meeting and a few short stories.

Lensman also inspired the Jedi, Babylon 5 and Green Lantern. The Skylark is arguably the first incarnation of an Interstellar Spacecraft ever. Landmark works of the science fiction genre that I just stumbled into at random.

JD having the water level of a river increased for his boating trip sounds like a overly heavy-handed demonstration of a movie villain's greed and contempt. It's shit the Baron Harkonnen or Immortan Joe would do.
