I don't understand the value of consumer VPNs. Can someone explain it to me? We do pretty much everything over SSL these days. Definitely everything that matters. That provides confidentiality, so intermediaries can't see the data, and server authentication, so they can't impersonate the server.

Talent is probably overrated. Talent is fixed mindset. You're born with it, it's in your genes, it's a gift. Practice is growth mindset. Anyone can learn, put in the work, practice hard, and get better. It takes drive, and some people start out with advantages, but talent isn't required.

For me, the defining characteristic of open source is that you're *giving up control* over your code. You can choose how much to give up, based on the license, but you pretty much always end up with less control than if you kept it closed source.

I'm a big fan of harm reduction. Passkeys are *better* than passwords. Nuclear power is *better* than coal or LNG. Vaping is *better* (maybe?) than smoking. They're not perfect. They're often not even good enough. But they are better then the status quo, and that's important.

Periodic reminder: we still don't have a comprehensive threat model for social software. We need one! Out of everything I want as a social software developer, a real threat model might be at the top of the list. It would help *so much*.
