I had seen it before, back in the '90s, trying to find as many D&B films as possible. A bit like The Hills Have Eyes, a bit like The Beasts (1980). As an '80s Hong Kong film, a lot of the first half is comical, even if creepily awkward. It's a good survival horror movie.

Battling over romances and status in the martial arts world is what drives this one through much of the first half. Of course, the scheming is relealed- such is the literary wuxia. There are lots of great fights, and your enjoyment will vary depending on how much you like melodramatic speeches.

It's got all the dreamy vibes and visual dazzle you want from '80s Obayashi. I love the way all the people we meet are represented by their key traits, dialed all the way up. What really resonated with me is that Mitamura is pushed to her limit and combats her foes with kindness. Wonderful stuff!

Beautifully shot, beautifully scored, disorienting mystery that keeps the viewer as unmoored as the protagonist. Is someone from her past taunting her? Is there a conspiracy? A ghost? Is she losing her grip on reality? The film masterfully keeps the options in the air. I love it.
