Water may soon cease to flow to the northern arm of the Great Salt Lake as a means to handle salinity challenges under a bill that the Utah Legislature passed during its special session.

Just Add Water personifies Great Salt Lake—the main character ventures into the city to understand what's happening and what can be done to fix it. Eb & Flo will travel to local elementary schools and centers around two characters, a "sensible seagull" named Eb and a "flamboyant flamingo" named Flo.

"What we are hoping to do is put forward recommendations that help underscore the uncertainty that we face, but also provide some hope and provide some common sense answers," said Kyle Roerink, the executive director of the Great Basin Water Network.

"We’re here for the birds. I think the governor, a lot of our legislators think the Endangered Species Act is for the birds. They’re right. We’re just naming them," renowned Utah author Terry Tempest Williams, who participated in the rally, told FOX 13 News.

"This legacy of really natural preservation in Salt Lake County can be there for future generations or it can be gone," said Jack Ray, the president of the Utah Waterfowl Association.

A controversial flagpole that was illegally placed atop the historic Black Rock landmark on the Great Salt Lake has been cut down, but not by Utah officials. The Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said the damaged flagpole was discovered on Tuesday, although its attached flag was missing.

A hearing to decide whether to terminate US Magnesium's leases on the Great Salt Lake has been delayed in light of the company's bankruptcy filing.

“Across the world, saline lakes are in decline,” said Gov. Cox. “Utah will be the exception. This will be one of the greatest environmental success stories of our time, and we are going to write it together. The Great Salt Lake is our lake, our heritage, and our responsibility.”

On Wednesday, Governor Spencer Cox announced a $200 million investment from business and philanthropic groups to specifically work to save the lake. He was joined by some of Utah's most wealthy and powerful people at an event at Farmington Bay.

"The issue is not about the flag but the flagpole that was installed into Black Rock. The division respects the desire to display the flag but needs to ensure it is done so in a proper and legal manner," the division wrote.

Health and environmental officials said elevated levels of harmful chemicals have been found in waterfowl harvested from the Great Salt Lake. Now, they’re updating consumption advisories to prevent long-term health effects.

US Magnesium, which operates a facility along Utah's Great Salt Lake, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Wednesday. The move comes weeks after Utah's Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands said it was seeking to terminate the company's leases to operate along the lake.

Ryan Rowland, data chief at the Utah Water Science Center, said the USGS has installed 38 new stream gauges in Utah in the past year. “So that's about a 25% to 30% increase on our stream gaging network," said Rowland. "Right now, we're pushing about 180 stream gauges in Utah."

A polluted tailings pond at the Kennecott Utah mine has sunk 20 feet or more, raising concerns that it has seeped contamination into the neighboring Great Salt Lake.
