From my research, the pub/bar situation for Latvians 🇱🇻 outside Riga looks 𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘮. Even in actual cities like Ventspils, Daugavpils, Jelgava, Režekne a struggle to find even 5 scratching passable bars between all four of them.

King Charles I, London 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 A pub that delivers over and over again. Twickenham Red Ale on form and only £5, Jazz playing, great mix of people. A little classic 5 mins (if that) away from Kings Cross. What more is there to say? 🍻👍

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, London 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 8th visit. Time to split opinion. Touristy Sam Smiths pub, high prices, but it is a special place in spite of it all. Main pub room is one of England's finest. Fireplace smell fills the room. Dutch visitors friendly, loving it. Bitter on great form 👍🍻

The Edgar Wallace, London 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 1st visit. Extraordinary interior which makes the horrible cream leather seats a baffling aberration. Friendly and social atmosphere that reminds me of Sutton Arms, but even more central. Central prices sadly too. Still, it's a big standout! 🍻👍

From a quiet Monday in Ulm 🇩🇪 to the Strand in Central London 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿! The Stranded, 1st visit. Budvar done Czech style. Hladinka pours from sidepull taps. Original, Nefiltr, Dark. Pricey for Budvar yet Timothy Taylor's cask is only £4.70. You'd pay more in Leeds! 👍🍻

Gaststuben im Zunfthaus der Schiffleute, Ulm 🇩🇪 2nd visit. Almost time to go home, but not before a return here! Very relaxed service without any obligation to eat, despite being core lunch time. Berg Ulrichsbier, an amber lager much better than yesterday's Märzen. Ive enjoyed Ulm & can recommend!🍻👍

Herrenkeller, Ulm 🇩🇪 1st visit. Opening time! One of the city's oldest Gaststätten. Gold-Ochsen, the city's brewery is on tap here. Pils/Weizen/Kellerbier. I have the latter. Nice service. 2-room interior. Pub/dining room. Traditional with xtra Easter tat. Ausschenk, Kachlofen & crown pattern glass👍🍻

Ulmer's Bierakademie, Ulm 🇩🇪 1st visit. Proper kneipe time now 🚬 Ulm lost to Ingolstadt ⚽, fans now piling in to drown their sorrows. 6 taps, mainstream really, but a supposedly extensive bottle selection of different styles. The old cellar type frontage was much better than Sky Sports 🤢🍻

Gasthaus Schlössle, Ulm 🇩🇪 1st visit. Former brewery. Last of their final brew, a Bockbier was drunk last month. But it is now a multitap pub offering regional brews like this *superb* Amber Weizen from Autenried. Garden in summer is popular too. Nice service! Maultaschen, Swäbisch speciality is 👌🍻

Drei Kannen, Ulm 🇩🇪 1st visit. Historical brewery, now defunct. Beer brewed by Gold-Ochsen north of the city centre. Lack of bar area and minimal social seating counts against it but it is a really interesting venue in other ways and has nice features. Spezial is tasty. Ok for lunch or to kill time👍🍻

Zur Lochmuhle, Ulm 🇩🇪 1st visit. Fisherman's quarter Wirtshaus with sitting places at the bar and really cosy niches around it. The waterwheel turns by the window, giving it a kind of meditative feel. Kachlofen, stained glass, nice terrace by the water. Berg bier. Another win! 🍻👍

Im Zunfthaus der Schiffleute, Ulm 🇩🇪 1st visit. Really pubby Gaststätte with a casual, social atmosphere. Ancient 1400s boatman's guildhouse. Mega characterful with galleries overlooking the bar. Rickety charm. Märzen from Berg Brauerei is a special on tap. English style glass too! 👍🍻

Joesepp's Brauerei, Memmingen 🇩🇪 1st visit. Modern brewpub & hotel. Similar to the Liechtenstein one yesterday. Tasteful wood/leather/metal. Copper brewkit in show, hop pole feature as a divider: not seen that before. Helles a typical brewpub affair. Grainy, robust, tad sweet. Lunch crowd arriving👍🍻

Café Wunderbar, Bregenz 🇦🇹 1st visit. Supposedly the late night option in town and that proves correct. Terrace and bar don't offer much but the upstairs is atmospheric and worth your while on an evening. 🍻👍

Scotch Club, Lindau 🇩🇪 1st visit. Looking for a late bar on the island that isn't an Irish theme pub? Here it is. Rocky dive bar. Nothing extreme, but welcoming. Not awful, not amazing. Augustiner Hell for €4.20. Back to Bregenz 🇦🇹 after this 🍻

Biero, Lindau 🇩🇪 1st visit. Super place. Minibrewpub with an open kitchen, casual tables by the fermenting tanks and small cellar with traditional 🪗 music tonight. The special Insulator Doppelbock hides its strength with aplomb 👍🍻

This was a winner. Like a Doppelbock ale rather than lager. Whisky, raisins, choco-caramel. As flat-roof pub regulars will remind you though, it all comes out as piss!

Liechtensteiner Braustube, Schaan 🇱🇮 1st visit. Woo! European Country #35 on our travels! Modern big money fringe of town industrial brewpub. Well put together, wood, leather, metal. Warm lighting, ease to the atmosphere. Alpengold lager uncompromising, bone dry, crisp, fresh. Shop on site too 🍻👍

Rösslepark, Feldkirch 🇦🇹 1st visit. Trip #7 of 2026 begins! Bonus quick stop en route to Liechtenstein 🇱🇮! What a pretty town. This is a brewpub for Frastanzer beers. Modern and not much to speak of aside a nice view of the castle. Kellerbier herby but close to classical lager. 👍🍻

So, looks like we may be away this weekend coming! Lake Constance: Bregenz 🇦🇹 and Lindau 🇩🇪 Liechtenstein 🇱🇮 Ulm and Memmingen 🇩🇪 All first visits. If I find a guide entry in Liechtenstein, we riot!

Couldn't resist a return to Caru' cu Bere, Bucharest 🇷🇴 before leaving. Was delighted to find Pilsner Urquell in superb condition, basically Czech standards. Violin quartet started up just now 🎻🍻👍 An absolutely spectacular European must-see.

Grădina Olari, Bucharest 🇷🇴 1st visit. Another courtyard bar which is such a feature of this city. Inside is pretty good too, with exposed brick and beams, tasteful lighting. Nice service. Guitars and board games. Carol craft beer. In summer this will come into its own 👍🍻

Lokal, Bucharest 🇷🇴 1st visit. Fantastic. This is ultimately why I go around Europe, for fun bars you can't find at home. So typical of Romania and a supreme example. Courtyard terrace, alternative slanted interior with a network of common rooms. Flötzinger Märzen ain't bad either. A must 🍻👍👍

Pardon Pub, Bucharest 🇷🇴 1st visit. In some ways nice, but...the photos are probably too complimentary. 2 room bar and it is pretty pubby for local standards. A nice selection overall too. But really inane puerile meme signage and tacky high tables lets it down a bit. Pub cat. Metzler Dunkel 🍫 🍻

Ironic Taproom, Bucharest 🇷🇴 1st visit. Post-modern taproom. Industrial aesthetics fading to a kind of Scandi "over it" vibe. Beers prices by the 100ml from boards labelled Departures and Arrivals. Nice mural. Sour beer specialists. Very tasty! 🍒

Zâganu, Bucharest 🇷🇴 1st visit. A little bit of a tired taproom, very mid-2010s, bar area not that pleasant. Service friendly though and brewery is from the early days of the Romanian craft beer scene. Some are deceptively pleasant like their Hefeweizen/Weizenbock hybrid. Bubblegum/banana 🍌🍻👍

Caru' cu bere, Bucharest 🇷🇴 1st visit. Spectacular 19th century beer hall. Among Europe's finest. Neo-gothic interior, cathedral-like. House beer from Ursus, Pilsner Urquell on draft. While an eatery, it's fairly relaxed & communal. Once seated you can continue drinks after a meal👍🍻

Teoria, Bucharest 🇷🇴 1st visit. Final stop tonight. Cocktail bar in yet another old mansion house. Trailing neons, side rooms, niches. Cocktails on a theme after my own heart: legendary closed bars of Bucharest. Eye For A Pint is a superb concoction! Fair prices, Bee Gees best of 🎶 🍸👍

Niște Domni și Fiii, Bucharest 🇷🇴 1st visit. Very cool eclectic bar in the old town of all places. Pub cats, train set and interesting music. Two levels. Drinks basic but some quasi-craft. Really an alternative scene place. Best one of the day so far 👍🍻

CIZ, Bucharest 🇷🇴 1st visit. Backstreets of the Jewish Quarter. Lovely courtyard which will be great in summer, typically homely interior with vintage furnishings. Romanian wines & teas. Food served but not mandatory. 🍷👍

Hop Hooligans Taproom, Bucharest 🇷🇴 1st visit. Typical converted mansion house space with modern fit c.2020. 20+ taps of this brewery's wares. US punk rock soundtrack. A few customers knocking around already. All couples (us included). Crowd Control IPA & 3's A Crowd Black IPA🍻

Ground Zero Taproom, Bucharest 🇷🇴 1st visit. Modern taproom. Striking ceiling feature livens up an otherwise template space. 6 core taps, 4 Deranj taps and several specials. Heavy rock soundtrack. Empty on this sunny Sunday, staff twiddling their thumbs 🍻
