McArt’s Fort, Belfast. Standing 368m above see level, this promontory fort (or ráth) is defended on the landward side by a deep ditch and on its other two sides by precipitous cliffs. While it is assumed to be Iron Age, very little investigation of the site has taken place #HillfortsWednesday

Following on from yesterday, it is only right that today’s #HengeWednesday is Giant’s Ring henge itself. Situated in Ballynahatty, Northern Ireland, this well preserved henge is 180m in diameter, enclosing an area of 6.9 acres. At least 3 of the current 5 entrances are thought to be original. 🏺

This Neolithic Court tomb from Ballintaggart County Armagh was at risk of destruction from expansion of a neighbouring quarry.  In 2006, the court tomb was dismantled and moved to the Ulster Folk Museum. #TombTuesday

Until the C19th, the Wadeway was the only crossing from Langstone to Hayling Island. Passable for a few hours before/after low tide. Once thought to be prehistoric or Roman in origin, archaeological survey & excavation in 2005 showed the causeway to be Medieval, probably C14th. #MedievalMonday 🏺

Today you get more Carisbrooke Castle for #MedievalMonday. The surviving motte & bailey was probably built in the early C12th when the Isle of Wight was under the lordship of Baldwin de Redvers. AncientBlueSky 🏺

Spent yesterday visiting Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight. It began life in the C11th as a Saxon “burh” before being converted into a motte & bailey after the Norman conquest. The remains of the Saxon stone wall can still be seen half way up the current bank #SaxonSunday AncientBlueSky 🏺

Viriconium Cornoviorum (Wroxeter) The surviving 7m high wall (part of the bath basilica) is the largest piece of free-standing Roman wall in the UK. Starting life as a fort, the main civic buildings were added 130-150AD. The city was deserted by the C5th #RomanSiteSaturday AncientBlueSky 🏺

Another find from our community excavation in a school playing field last week. A very well worn Victorian “bun” Penny, dating to 1861. The lower pictures (not our coin) helps pick out out the well worn features in our coin (upper picture) which can only just be determined #FindsFriday 🏺

Richborough - A site that represents both the very beginning & the very end of Roman occupation in Britain. From a military base in AD43, to a thriving port town, to which a larger fort (one of many Saxon Shore forts) was then added in the later Roman period #RomanFortThursday AncientBlueSky 🏺

#HillfortsWednesday Flower’s Barrow Hillfort, Dorset A small multivallate hillfort on Rings Hill & perched on the edge of the cliffs above Worbarrow Bay. It is fast disappearing into the sea due to processes of natural coastal erosion AncientBlueSky 🏺

Table des Marchand, Locmariaquer, Brittany. The dolmen was excavated & reconstructed inside a cairn in 1993. The main capstone of the chamber includes a large carving depicting an axe. This stone was likely part of an earlier broken menhir. #TombTuesday AncientBlueSky 🏺

The Broken Menhir of Er Grah, Locmariaquer, Brittany. 1 of 19 erected in a row c.4700 BC. At over 20m high it is the largest known single block of stone to have been transported & erected by Neolithic people. Fallen c.4000 BC possibly by an earthquake #StandingStoneSunday AncientBlueSky 🏺

#RomanSiteSaturday Silchester Roman Town & Amphitheatre. Unlike most Roman towns, it was never reoccupied or built over after it was abandoned in the C6th or C7th, so archaeological investigations have given an unusually complete picture of its development. AncientBlueSky 🏺

Quarry Wood Camp “Oppidum”, Kent Much of the SW side has been destroyed by quarrying, exposing pottery & bone from the early C1st AD. A lot is still to be learnt about the site but a pre conquest hub controlling the local iron smelting industry has been suggested #HillfortsWednesday AncientBlueSky 🏺

#TombTuesday Maeshowe. Situated on Mainland Orkney, this chambered cairn was built c.5000 yrs ago, possibly on top of an earlier structure. Until the mound & stone roof were damaged by Norse settlers & again in the 1800s, it is thought the mound may have once had a conical shape AncientBlueSky 🏺
