#OnThisDay – or 13 July – in 100 BCE, the future dictator, general, and statesman Julius #Caesar was born. The obverse of this #silver #denarius shows #Aeneas, carrying palladium in right hand and Anchises on left shoulder. The #coin was minted in 47/46 BCE. CC.369

This digitised glass plate #negative #photo was taken in 1901-1902 and it shows a #stela with a #hieroglyphic inscription from the site D1 at Bet Dawd. The stela commemorates the #sculptor Sa-ra (son of Ra) and is now part of the Ashmolean Museum's collection. JG/R/2/149b

#ObjectoftheDay is this ancient Cypriot white slip tankard type vessel. Thin clay was applied on the grey body of the vessel (referred to as white slip) to provide a background for various patterns in black and brown colours. This type of tankard was most likely used for wine drinking. C.237

It's #WorldTurtleDay & we're sharing this ancient Greek silver coin decorated with a sea turtle. This issue originated in Aegina, likely in the 5th century BCE, when Aegina was a rival of Athens. The turtle may have been a symbol of naval power, as turtles are commonly seen in the Aegean Sea. CC.77

#ObjectoftheDay is this #ancientGreek buff-coloured stamnos with black band and triangle decoration, and brown lines. This type of vessel was used to store liquids, but it could have had a similar function to the krater: namely to stir wine and water together to dilute them. C.639

#WorldTheatreDay & we’re sharing this red figure pottery sherd decorated with the head of #Dionysus. Famously known as the #god of #wine he was also the god of theatre. This sherd probably dates to around the 5th century B.C.E., when worship of Dionysus was increasingly popular. C.694

Our #ObjectoftheDay is this #ancientGreek (#Corinthian) #pyxis, a small, cylindrical vessel. t. It was used for storage of small items such as #jewellery & #cosmetics. This pyxis is decorated with black and brown shapes on its feet, and there are traces of black glaze on the inside. C.636
