#objectoftheday is this Corinthian aryballos decorated with soldiers in black and purple on white background. It dates to the Late Corinthian I period, 575-550 BCE. Aryballoi were small containers for scented oils thatwere mass-produced and widely distributed. C.619

#OnThisDay in 316 CE Diocletian died in Croatia. He was an Emperor of Rome from 284 to 305 CE & infamous for his persecution of Rome’s Christian population. This bronze nummus shows a bust of Diocletian during his reign and was minted between 297 and 305 CE. CC.773

#Onthisday in 30 CE, the Roman #Emperor Nerva was born. This copper alloy #sestertius can be dated to 96 CE and shows the profile portrait of Nerva facing to the right wearing the laurel wreath on its observe. The reverse depicts clasped hands holding a legionary eagle set on prow. CC.451

For this #ScienceSunday we are sharing a photo of the visit from the Digital Innovation Facility staff. They came over in November 2022 to #laser #scan a number of the museum's #artefacts, including this ancient Egyptian #coffin lid. The scans are used to produce #3Dmodels of the objects.

#ObjectoftheDay is the rim and body of a black figure, white ground #ancientGreek #lekythos. This type of vessel was used for storing oil and more specifically olive oil. The white ground technique used made them too fragile for regular use & they were mainly associated with funerary rites. C.655

#OnThisDay in 382CE, the #Roman #Emperor Theodosius signed a treaty with the Visigoths which granted them lands between the Lower Danube and the Balkans. The obverse of this #gold #solidus minted in #Constantinople shows a bust of Theodosius. It dates to the period of 378-383CE. CC.1239
