I saw something yesterday about how young people are leading protests all over the world demanding change. It feels like the Green Party in the UK and the Mamdani campaign in NY are extensions of that movement. People like these ideas, we just need to spread the message.

It is crucial, as Socialists, that we never fall for liberal elitism. Don’t sneer at the working class. Engage them. Speak with them. Struggle with them. Help them find class consciousness. Please. It's especially important because building solidarity across divides is the only way we win.

Fred Hampton said: “We’re going to fight racism with solidarity. We’re not going to fight capitalism with Black capitalism. We’re going to fight it with socialism.” That vision, a Rainbow Coalition, is still our task. It's important to remember it, esp. today with the passing of Assata Shakur.

Of course, as socialists, we must be clear in our approach: engaging poor conservative workers is not the same as engaging fascists. Know the difference! We avoid fascists entirely. But the millions of working class people who’ve been lied to and manipulated by the ruling class? They’re our people.

The Black Panthers knew this well. Chicago Black Panther leader, Fred Hampton, was building the Rainbow Coalition: uniting poor Black, Latino, and white workers across ideological divides. That’s exactly part of the reason why the US government assassinated him. BECAUSE HE WAS SUCCEEDING!

Leftism starts at ANTI CAPITALISM. As socialists, it’s our responsibility to engage all of the working class — not just the ones who already agree with us. That means speaking to the conservative, rural, and even reactionary-leaning workers too. That’s how class consciousness is built.
