loading . . . 'Anxiety, fear, and revolt' - Hundreds in Amadora demand justice for Odair Moniz, other victims of police violence | Video Viory Hundreds marched through the streets of Amadora on Saturday, demanding justuce for Cape Verdean immigrant Odair Moniz who was killed by police last October, as well as all victims of police violence. Footage shows demonstrators marching, chanting, drumming, and holding 'Justice for Odair Moniz' banners, with one wearing a shirt reading, 'What does it mean to be Black and alive right now?' A graffiti artist can be seen painting a mural as protesters raise their fists in solidarity. The march, led by the Vida Justa movement and joined by Deputy Fabian Figueiredo, capped a wave of anti-eviction protests held since March 15 across Almada, Amadora, Barreiro, Cascais, Loures, Seixal, and Sintra. "The police often do this, but always to people from the neighbourhoods. No one from Cascais has ever been killed by the police, no one from Oriente has ever been killed by the police," said Wilson, a demonstrator. He added, "They come to the neighbourhoods with an already aggressive attitude, and there's no need for that. Talking helps people understand each other. If you treat me well, I'll treat you well," stressing, "I'm discriminated against here, not only by the police but also by society." "This issue, whether it's racism, whether it's aggression, whether it's a lack of police command. When we saw the images of the case, we saw that there were several loopholes and even lies," stated another protester, Ivan, noting that they feel 'anxiety, fear, and revolt'. Demonstrator Flavio explained they rally to remind that they "will not forget, that we continue to demand justice for Odair and all victims of police violence. For those who were killed, those who were unjustly imprisoned, those who were tortured, and those who were humiliated." "The first reaction was to criminalise the victim and charge him with his own death. We all knew it was his car; then they said he attacked the officer, that he had a knife," he recalled the details of Moniz's case. Odair Moniz, a 43-year-old Cape Verdean immigrant, was shot dead by police in Amadora in October 2024 during a disputed stop over a stolen car. The case sparked outrage over alleged police cover-up, racism, and ongoing violence against Black and immigrant communities in Portugal. | Video Viory https://www.viory.video/en/videos/a3603_13042025/anxiety-fear-and-revolt-hundreds-in-amadora-demand-justice-for-odair-moniz-other-victims-of-police-violence
