New Reekie? Actually most of that "smoke" is steam from large boilers which you only really see when it is so cold that the steam cloud lasts a wee bit longer.

This caught my attention yesterday morning, where the Clunie meets the Dee. A big diamond of ice, gently floating downstream.

Sometime in the mid-1780s, Robert Barker was out for a walk on Calton Hill when he had an idea to record the cityscape - the entire 360 degree view from one spot. On Capital Collections you can see the resulting wonderful panoramic view and see how Edinburgh looked 200 years ago!

Soon-to-be-axed 7am Manchester-London train will still run – but without passengers
Exclusive: Rail regulator pulls Avanti service from timetable from mid-December but it is needed for staff travel The good news for rail travel between Manchester and London is that a morning train will continue to link England’s biggest cities in under two hours. The bad news: passengers will no longer be able to get onboard. The rail regulator has axed one of Britain’s fastest and most lucrative intercity services, the 7am Avanti West Coast from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston, as part of a timetable shake-up that will take effect in mid-December. The 'Bantam' pedestal box - more properly the 'Type N' - was the last of the type lettered pillar boxes. Introduced in 1999, it featured an updated collection system. Welsh language versions were also produced - the first time this had been seen on a postbox
