Every year we are delighted to have the Society of Equestrian Artists back painting in the museum grounds! For day one, the artists are painting models Louise and Duster with Castle House in the background - very ‘My Wife, My Horse and Myself’!!🐴 🎩 🎨

At just eighteen years old a local Cornish lad, Edward Osborne, always known as Ned, became the principal model for Munnings paintings carried out in Cornwall of Hunts and other scenes.

Behind the Garden-room is a secret courtyard, also now open, where you will find the wisteria coming into flower. Take a seat in the sunshine and study the sketches drawn into the once wet plaster on the wall by Munnings himself!

What a pleasure to attend the opening and preview of The Society of Equestrian Artists new special Spring exhibition last night at the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket. The exhibition, ‘We Give You the Horse’ showcases the best work of their Full and Associate Members.

It was 77 years ago today that Sir Alfred Munnings made his retirement speech at the Annual Dinner of the Royal Academy of Arts.

Cherrybounce is one of Munnings’ own bred horses in the painting Why Weren’t You out Yesterday?. In his autobiography he recalled naming the horse after one belonging to Lord Scamperdale in Mr Sponge’s Sporting Tour (1853), by R. S. Surtees.

In the 250th anniversary year of the birth of John Constable a second exhibition explores the influence of Constable on the life and work of Sir Alfred Munnings.

Munnings made several paintings in detail of the rock formations at Lamorna Cove. In this work he used a compositional technique to establish a low viewpoint by painting a small sliver of sky above the rocks.

The special exhibition ‘Pictures from Private Collections’ charting the museum’s history culminates with twenty paintings from Private Collections, many rarely seen in public.
