Only four more days to catch our 2025 displays & special exhibition “A Long, Glittering Line” 👑 The exhibition marks the centenary of Sir Alfred Munnings painting the Royal Procession to Ascot, a commission from Queen Mary in 1925.

“At last I was seeing the colour of a scarlet coat in the sun, the sheen of a clipped horse, with the lighting on fences, tree trunks, fields.” These words written by Munnings are exemplified in Hunting Morning, painted when he was working in Cornwall.

🎨 #MakingAPicture   Munnings equestrian portraits were often painted over several sites on multiple dates. An example of this is the portrait of Sir Raymond Greene, where Munnings wrote in detail of the experience of painting his portrait.

Two locations on the river Waveney were used as the backdrop for this picture. Initially at Hoxne, and then later at Mendham when Munnings worked behind the Mill. Dull days and evenings were the favoured times for working on this painting.

oin Museum Director Jenny Hand for this short tour of pictures spanning Munnings life and career and an introduction to the history and architecture of Castle House, his former home.

“I learned all I know of a horse’s head from that cast.” Influences from this early sketch of the Parthenon Horses Head can be seen when Munnings was painting The Start series of pictures much later in life, in the 1950s’.

Nobby Gray, seated on the horse in the centre of the composition was a van dweller and traveller. Nobby, his wife Charlotte, and son Fred were used as models for numerous paintings by Munnings who wrote of them:

Riding side-saddle, Violet Munnings always cut a fine figure on horseback 🎩 🐴 A renown horsewoman, when she married Alfred Munnings in 1920, she is seen here chatting with the Queen of Spain in Rotten Row, Hyde Park, in 1924 and as winner of the Challenge Cup for Hacks at Richmond in 1934.
