For Dr Bill Teatheredge, this work was painted in what he would describe as Munnings’ best period, around 1900-1915. At this point he was finding his way as an artist in his own right and painting subjects which he enjoyed doing, unlike the later dreaded commissions.

Welcome back! This morning’s Throwback Thursday photo was East Street in Colchester, looking west towards East Bridge. The scene has changed in some ways (no more tramlines or telegraph wires overhead) but many of the buildings remain. Just look at that shop on the right, still standing!

This rarely seen study by Munnings is an oil on panel. At only 17 by 24 cms, it is a diminutive work and yet Munnings has captured an expansive scene of moorland and background hills within his composition . He is likely to have sat at the scene painting ‘plein air’.

Munnings wrote graphically about an Autumn ride he had on one occasion. It was “a day becalmed; the trees motionless! Summer resigning itself in tranquillity to autumn.…

Munnings painted the Rank’s racehorses on numerous occasions at their stables, Druids Lodge, Salisbury. Here, he depicts Mrs Rank relaxing by her swimming pool.

For #RememberanceDay 🌹 During the First World War Munnings found difficulty being accepted for the war effort, having lost the sight in his right eye.

Only four more days to catch our 2025 displays & special exhibition “A Long, Glittering Line” 👑 The exhibition marks the centenary of Sir Alfred Munnings painting the Royal Procession to Ascot, a commission from Queen Mary in 1925.

“At last I was seeing the colour of a scarlet coat in the sun, the sheen of a clipped horse, with the lighting on fences, tree trunks, fields.” These words written by Munnings are exemplified in Hunting Morning, painted when he was working in Cornwall.
