In 1784, a Royal Commission headed by Benjamin Franklin & Antoine Lavoisier designed experiments to debunk France's greatest medical rogue, Anton Mesmer, and his 'cure for all diseases' based on a bogus 'animal magnetism'. In the process, they invented the placebo-blinded clinical trial.
