It’s felt like an eternity since my last record shop visit. Atomic Records in Burbank yielded three for me today.

Back in the Rapture’s early days they came through town a few times and were just kinda lame guys. So a friend of mine put a package of raw beef in their bass cabinet as a little mysterious gift for them to discover during their tour.

I did not realize that tonight’s episode of Chief of War was the finale—who does 9-episode seasons??—but in any case it was very good. This show feels slept on (in my bubble at least?). It’s a great show.

It’s been three days and I still can’t stop thinking about how malignant the score to HIGHEST 2 LOWEST is. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film rendered almost unwatchable purely because of the score.

It took a few listens but this morning I was playing the new Big Thief album and it completely opened up for me. It feels very distinct from their other albums and I'm on board with the vibes they are going for.

Really enjoyed the first episode of TASK. Has some bleak backstory which I’m sure they’ll dig deeper into in the ensuing episodes. Hopefully it’s not too much of a misery pile-on. But in the meantime, just some great character building and great performances from the whole cast.

Have listened to the new Big Thief album exactly one time so far. I like it; it refracts into something more focused in contrast to the purposefully messy Dragon New Warm Mountain. It really kicked into gear in the middle stretch—from “All Night All Day” through “Grandmother”

Took a trip down to Long Beach to visit Record Box, which I heard was sadly going out of business. Good news: everything was 50% off; bad news: the owner seems like a genuinely nice guy and there were so many people in the shop who were clearly regulars. Sad to see a community lose something great.

Kathleen Edwards is one of my favorite songwriters going but after a week or so listening to her album, I just can’t get over how disappointing “Need a Ride” is. Some real red state red meat. I never associated her with this perspective before.

Anyway I second everything @darkforcesswing.bsky.social says about Dazzling Killmen's FACE OF COLLAPSE, and while we're add it, urge you to track down craw's s/t debut too. Both are total masterpieces.

It's almost eerie the way Hank and I came to both craw and Dazzling Killmen. For me, living in a small town, finding craw's debut on a lark and buying based solely on the album cover--and then being so blown away that I tracked down every band they listed in the thank-you list in their liner notes.

Today’s haul from Record Surplus in west LA required a lot of tough decisions. Put back a lot of stuff that I hope will still be there next time I go. But I’m happy with what I bought!
