There's ongoing discourse about whether digital technology is impacting attention spans, but the empirical research does not seem to connect with what is felt by the general public. So, to better understand the perceptions, we examined what was being said on the issue in four relevant subreddits.

Here's what I think of this study.

“The data was returned to us” is a wild thing to say to try to calm stakeholders. I’m curious if anyone has searched the dark web to see if millions of students‘ names and contact information can be bought.

"American hegemony". I'm not being ironic here. I think this is a useful answer.

Is there some informal "law" that states that popular entertainment with completely uncontroversial political narratives - like fighting a universal dictatorial evil - will eventually be questioned for its biased politicised?

In evolutionary biology, we call this conflation of proximate and ultimate explanations. Kind of argumentation like "this bird does not sing because it helps to attract a mate, he just has high testosterone levels."

I have some fond memories of my first VSS. For example, I remember driving a rental around Naples trying to find a “Kin-coes“!?? Apparently they could print my poster. Anyway, they did and it was good and cheap and that’s why I now always pull the chute late on posters. Ain’t nothing like it.

We all agree that the brain is constantly making various predictions. However, if we want to be serious about discovering and quantifying how the brain generates and leverages predictions, we have to think about all the ways our data may be compatible with an entirely non-predictive process. 👏

The answer to these sorts of questions seems obvious to me, so maybe I'm missing something: the reason these new tools can do this is because /people/ invented the way to solve these problems, and then shared their solutions. IMO, let's ignore LLMs, and teach philosophy first.

I have a generative model of visual imagery with neural loops. It recapitulates individual differences in visual imaging abilities, results in differing effects for simple stimuli (Gabor) versus complex stimuli (faces), and can invoke "nonvisual imagery". But I can't be bothered writing it up...

3/6 We inserted replay in various densities in the control resting state - this way we could determine TDLM's sensitivity. To our surprise, more than 80 replay events per minute (A->B transitions), were necessary to find an effect! Far beyond biologically plausible rates (cf. ripple density).
