Musings from a small Spanish village. Why was the 10yo helping his dad at the market stall not at school? Can you gag a rooster? One day I will remember that 3pm is not a time to go shopping. Why was there rave music at the square at 1pm? Why did Spain decide to not have bins for each house?

Drove to Ikea Murcia for pieces to show the house. Then a salesperson took over my self scanning. Bit my tongue so as not to bark "¡mi espanol es suficiente para comprar cosas en Ikea; es el mismo tramité todo el mundo!" Then parked with the 4-ways on to get everything in the apartment block 😬

Of COURSE one lets off firecrackers for mother's day in a Spanish village. Silly me. And that sets the dogs off, and the rooster (who is lucky he's not soup as he goes from 5am to 10pm). Add in church bells every 15min, 24h a day and quiet village life is an oxymoron 🤣

Well, we have cleared the vast amounts of crap, discovered so many, UK, Au and Euro coins and sold the dining set. And then the sun came out so we lazed on the sun terrace with a glass of wine this afternoon. I take her home tomorrow and then I wait for Spanish bureaucracy to work.

Mum's cousin has come down for 2 days to clear the flat. In 4h we filled 12 bags and took them to the clothing bins. Tomorrow we box up ornaments, books, frames, crockery and cutlery, bag up curtains for charity, and dump rugs, beach umbrellas and a dead pedestal fan. I'm feeding her pizza and wine

Farewell mum, you were a stubborn, adventurous whirlwind of a woman. Gone too soon. I'm sorry I didn't get you out of hospital, but you were too frail to move. 😭 There is a massive hole in my heart right now

Update on my mum. We have gone from checking care homes to all meds via IV because she can't swallow, removing the chemo treatment and adding morphine. And now we wait. She's only 72. The lesson is don't assume because your parents were young when they had you that they'll be around longer

Observations of village and hospital life: I am eternally grateful that the doctors and at least half the nurses speak English. I can explain stomach ache and request helping mum move in bed, but the big conversations I am not up to. There are no medical rounds on the weekend in Spain

And off I go to visit mum. Fly out tomorrow night, with a friend of hers also arriving, god knows where we're all staying, if they let mum home at all. Hoping my Spanish can help me with the abogado and her doctors.

Slept without waking up to cough my guts up thrre times in the night for the first time in nearly 2 weeks. Coughing now I'm awake but baby steps. Hurrah for antibiotics. Praise be to Fleming, Florey and Chain

Still unwell. Back to the doctor I go. Bored of this. And mum is back in hospital. And the urge to fly over and attempt to advocate for her is strong.

Day 4 of 50mg steroids, day 7 of feeling utterly shite. Breathing optional. Returning to my bed. So fed up of being unwell 😭😭😭🤬🤬🤬

My mum has never driven. She had 1 lesson, smashed the bumper while parking, threw up with anxiety. She's struggling to walk more than 200m atm, so a friend got her a mobility scooter. She crashed it first time, but is persisting. 😮🤦🏻‍♀️ To the people of her small village in Spain, I apologise 😂

Life's a bit pants rn, we're all unwell in the house. My asthma's so bad that I'm on steroids. Just argued with husband over flying to give my mum a nice few weeks, and discussed palliative care with my aunt (her sister). WW3 is breathing down our necks. So some escapism - this really happened 🤭

I have been vegetarian for 28 of my 52y. I have eaten at McDonalds only if the kids wanted fries or nuggets, I grabbed a coke. Husband has eaten there more than me. He had never heard of Hamburglar. 😲 It's true that each couple has an online aware person and one who lives under a rock. 🤣

I am feeling fragile. Mum is struggling, her latest chemo meds are making her sicker than the cancer, and if the alternative doesn't work, we move to palliative care. Send me silly memes, cute pics of Louis, Harry, Hudson or Connor. I suspect I'll be in Spain in the next few months to care for her
