The study was launched by University of Florence and it is supported by @projectpsyche.bsky.social and @10klepgenomes.bsky.social as their common goal is to sequence genomes of all butterflies and moths, regardless of their presumed beauty!

Truly great report by Glenn Zorpette at @spectrum.ieee.org on one of the most exciting scientific EU-level projects going on, the @10klepgenomes.bsky.social COST action alongside with @projectpsyche.bsky.social. Sequence all leps in Europe and make discoveries a landmark in genomics and lep biology!

The @10klepgenomes.bsky.social COST action enabled fifty experts to work together in Italy to achieve this remarkable feat. The genomes generated by Project Psyche will help the @ebpgenome.bsky.social to reach the ambitious aim of sequencing all species on Earth.

Most species of butterfly and moth have 31 highly conserved chromosomes. However, bursts of karyotypic diversity have occurred in some groups due to high rates of chromosome fission and/or fusion. Why certain species undergo these bursts of chromosome rearrangement is unknown.
