Today makes 2 years since I was hospitalized due to transphobia at Aberdeen and an extremely abusive supervisor. There are many difficult days and the uni still has does nothing to change, but I’m proud of myself for the healing that has occurred, and for still chasing my dream of getting my PhD

I cannot explain how jarring it is to be attacked for years for being non-binary by staff I've never spoken to, told by management it was probably my fault for *existing*, then hear that person is planning on writing a book about how they were persecuted by the university. 15 more months here 🙃

New intro for a new year! I'm Rowan (they/them), an interdisplinary PhD student studying predation on seabirds + making ornithology more inclusive. I have several projects to address linguistic biases in ecology and love languages; my most recent project is learning Euskara (Basque)!

Looking back at 2025, my professional highlight was moving to a safer dept at Aberdeen to escape the transphobia at SBS, which has also led to doing an interdisciplinary thesis I love. And of course the overall highlight was getting Ebro 💙 Can't wait for 2026 and being one year closer to submitting!

Had a fantastic time at my first #BES2025 conference, the highlights being 1) presenting a poster on my PhD chapter on linguistic imperialism in ornithology and hearing from so many other interdisciplinary researchers, and 2) seeing so many friends and getting to meet lots of new ones!

I'm admittedly biased, but an already great #BES2025 talk was made even better by the appearance of fulmars! Looking forward to another great day of ecology talks and posters!

One of the most fun parts of having my parents visit me in the UK for the first time is seeing their reactions to birds that are common here but new to them. They're not even birders but their favourites so far have been wood pigeons and magpies, which makes my ornithologist heart very happy 😊
