Generally: if they don't get out the phone, you don't get out the phone.
You can easily thrive in Japan with a half dozen phrases and some grace. You will run into racism, but it's rare, and given how some tourists act, nearly warranted.
Japanese hospitality is overall incredible. Be chill.
