We had a long conversation between some former youth and our former workers, about how much HARDER it was to get up and get out of bed and deal with school AND manage our trauma. They agreed that trauma informed care was not really the best practices at the time.

For youth from care, “adulting” often means survival without backup. No emergency contact. No soft place to land. No one to call when it all falls apart. We’re told we’re “resilient.” We’re expected to thrive. But resilience without resources is just a nicer word for neglect. #TalkAboutItTuesday

One of the main reasons I ADORE @seananmcguire.bsky.social is she rights so many people, girls, who don't have families, who have experienced good (Miss Ellie Elenore) or bad (Whitethorn) intitnionalied care. The books are fantasy but the the experiences, they are real, they are MY real.

Everyone wants to know who they were as kids—but when you grow up in care, those stories can be hard to find. Tomorrow, I’m making my annual pilgrimage with a fellow group home girl to lunch with staff who knew us back then. These connections matter.💜
