So much of my print practice involves working with paper to figure out mechanics and format. Almost always beginning with scraps of paper; torn folded, scribbled on. It's such a valuable part of my process. Think > test > adjust > make.

I often see the word 'kerning' used incorrectly by CSS heads when the term they're actually looking for to describe letter spacing is 'tracking'. Let me explain using CSS terminology! Tracking is the same as gap in flex layouts; consistent spacing applied across the entire text. But what if... 🧵

Found a little bug in Chrome where a backdrop filter on an element doesn't apply to text if there's anything on the page with a mix-blend-mode. Thanks to @joshwcomeau.com for the help diagnosing it!

I revisited a book project from a couple years ago today. I used a variable font and JavaScript inside InDesign to make the text get bolder, or darker, as it got deeper down the page, mimicking the ocean, the subject of the book. The cover was made from plastic recovered from the sea by fishermen

One of the “real life” projects I’m working on at the moment is a permanent installation on Bristol’s famous King Street. I just got some samples of some custom made ceramic tiles from Spain delivered. So exciting to have these in hand after nearly two years of thinking and planning for this project

I took @bell.bz's CSS course which is amazing. I developed a very snazzy site and it came together quickly and smoothly. Back down to Earth with a bang after the designer came back with insanely granular edits that increased the css x10 and made the site so much more brittle. No all bad though...

I’ve got great hopes for this site. I’ve mentioned it to a lot of my international students over the past couple years. Being articulate about type is so important for designers so filling the gaps in other languages is vital

It's alive! Here's a first draft of a virtual Aeolian harp that's taking wind data from Wicken Fen Nature Reserve an turning it into a working sound instrument. Lots of work to do on the UI but the hard part is done... I hope.

I just created a little image tool for a client that solves an issue where the various supplied images they use for posts would either get unflatteringly cropped or the grid would look uneven if the whole image is visible. I've been meaning to make something like this for a while!
