In this installation, a curved screen becomes an evocative lightshow of ever-changing shapes, colours, and shadows, created through reflection and refraction of light. While the mind perceives solid forms and architectural structures, the viewer knows they’re witnessing only fleeting projections.

Covering the gallery wall like a textured tapestry, 'Moss Wall’ (1994) is composed of reindeer moss, a lichen native to northern latitudes. When dry, it shrinks and fades; when watered, it expands and releases an earthy, pungent scent. The work is on view at @aucklandartgallery until March 23.

Upon entering Auckland Art Gallery, visitors encounter ‘Under the weather’ (2022). As they move, the screen flickers with a shifting moiré pattern. Like ‘Beauty' (1993), the experience is shaped by perspective. This artwork is now part of 'Your curious journey’ at @aucklandartgallery.

In ‘Landscape', Olafur engages with the long-established traditions of landscape painting and photography, exploring how we construct and perceive images of nature. ‘Landscape’, 1995, will be on view at Repetto Gallery Lugano, from February 20 to April 11.

Olafur’s most recent catalogue documenting 'Shadows travelling on the sea of the day’ and ‘The curious desert’ in Qatar features the outdoor and indoor components of the exhibition, in addition to a series of essays diving into the scientific and artistic elements of the permanent artwork.

"If you look at the clusters of sculptural elements unfolding left and right, you may notice a quite extraordinary effect: the array of mirrors connects and perfects what is physically distinct and partial,” says Olafur. '‘سفر الظلال في بحر النهار (Shadows travelling on the sea of the day), 2022.

Designed for this purpose, segments of the cylindrical lamps are blacked out to create directional beams, while others are covered with colour gels, casting single-hued light. 'Orientation lights for rising seas', 2023, was part of the exhibition ‘The curious desert’ at the National Museum of Qatar.

A network of small lighthouses was positioned in five villages in Tuscany as part of the exhibition Arte all’Arte, which invited artists to create temporary site-specific artworks. 'Five orientation lights’, 1999, remaps the experience of landscape and movement.

Olafur describes time as something often understood abstractly, yet made tangible physically. “We take time from the glacier by touching it.” The title, 'Your waste of time', plays on this idea: not only is the ice displaced from its natural context and destined to melt away

'Your disappearing garden’, 2011, explores movement, time, and landscape through a room-sized installation of obsidian rock filling the gallery's space. This work brings a fragment of Iceland’s highlands into the exhibition, inspired by Olafur's hikes through the obsidian fields of Hrafntinnusker.

This floor pattern is based on a two-dimensional interpretation of three-dimensional quasi-bricks. Overhead, mirrored ceilings extend the visual effect of the geometric arrangement. 'Frost activity' 2004, was first exhibited at Hafnarhús in Reykjavik, and later at ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum in Denmark.
