I'm not in the FGC myself, but I do spend a lot of time thinking about a similarly complex game, Magic: The Gathering. I've got a noob in my vintage cube draft group, he won his first match after three drafts, and he's having a blast. The "no combos to bad to good to optimal" progression is spot on.
