The only one of her books I see people talk is Leviathan's Deep (sexist human men meet matriarchal aliens), but I am very fond of the Rabelais sequence, cyberpunk-influenced space opera set in an interstellar capitalist hellscape.

Diana Wynne Jones, Fire & Hemlock (reread-along with EDODWJ): Complex Tam Lin/Thomas the Rhymer retelling/writer coming-of-age story. It used to be tied with Howl's Moving Castle as my favorite, but I've grown more & more uneasy with it over time (1/4)

CHUNG Bora, Midnight Timetable: A Novel in Ghost Stories - I am not sure this is actually a novel, but also I don't care. Ghost stories involving -- more often tangentially than centrally -- an institute that stores haunted & cursed artifacts, and has many ghosts, some human and some not. (1/2)

Freya Marske, Cinder House - a Cinderella retelling where Cinderella's ghost merges with the house; very sharp on how acquired disability transforms a life; very interested in different kinds of queerness; beautiful sentences. (1/2)

Maureen Kincaid Speller, A Traveller in Time - This year I caught up on some of the sf reviews & lit crit in my TBR. This collection was a pleasure and a sorrow; I wish MKS were still here. (1/2)

Bethany Jacobs, These Burning Stars - The first in a space opera trilogy featuring the extremely twisty machinations of lesbians & enbies & making a very thorough exploration of how systems protect themselves & demand complicity with atrocity. Some exceptionally good plot twists. Prose kinda dull.

Alison Sinclair, Lightborn - For some reason I felt like rereading the Darkborn trilogy even though I remembered it starting strong and completely falling apart by the end. This is Book 2, which means it hasn't fallen apart yet, but you can see the signs. (1/4)

Barbara Willard, Echo Answers - Willard is best known for her YA historicals, esp. the Middlemass series, a generation saga that goes from the Wars of the Roses to the Civil War; it is clear-sighted and often bleak. This is one of her early adult novels. (1/3)
