Back in the 2000s I went off on a bunny trail with my Sicilian last name. An older cousin told me grandpa once said our last name has Japanese roots. I was VERY skeptical until one day I came across a Japanese surname book at the public library. I was shocked to find it in there. #GenChat

Does anyone have tips on finding the town of origin for #IrishAncestors? Censuses only say Ireland & I haven't found any ship records. Even if I did, not sure it would give the town. Ship records from the 1800s give very little info & usually only give just the country. #Genealogy #IrishGenealogy

My paternal grandmother's sister gave me a tiny silver horseshoe pin when I was born sent all the way from Sicily. There's a note written in Italian inside the box. I looked up the jeweler's name/address on Google maps. Building is still there, but jeweler is gone. #GenChat

If you’re stuck in your research, change the spelling. Your ancestor didn’t misspell their name — the clerk did, the enumerator did, the printer did — don’t get locked into one spelling. Be flexible enough to work around it. #genealogy #genchat #familyhistory

Started using RootsMagic 2 yrs ago as an offline tree but baffled by it because of pedigree collapse. It turned into a sort of genealogy whack-a-mole. Added ancestors/spouses/children & everyone showed up twice on both lines. Deleting duplicates on 1 line made ancestors disappear on other.🙄#GenChat
