Weathering Time began with a simple question, “What would it be like to photograph myself and watch myself grow older?” Four decades and 2500 photographs later, the answer is a monumental, ongoing ‘visual almanac’, recently announced as the 2026 OpenWalls Spotlight series winner.

It 100% harms AHSS, but as a bonus, it also harms STEM. Curiosity driven, investigator led research drives innovation where there isn't a more immediate commercial incentive, and industry already pursues research where there is. Universities exist for the public good, not to subsidize industry.

AHSS research is already massively underfunded in Ireland, proposals to restructure funding models and prioritise commercialisation of research will disproportionately impact the humanities - Irish academics, post-docs & post-grads past, current and future please add your voice in opposition 👇

Within the artist’s images, faces turn away, figures disappear into the luminous dark, and hues nearly vibrate with technicolor saturation. She probes both the intimacy of relationships and the tricks of memory, casting strangers as her sisters or friends as stand-ins for herself.

“It’s meant to make everything slightly off-kilter, to force the viewer to really try to decipher. There is a level of obscurity to it, a question of visibility and invisibility, of how much is too much, and how much is not enough.”

While narrative accounts concerning the stray sod vary, they generally describe occasions in which individuals are forced to navigate a landscape characterised by its sudden shift into unfamiliarity and strangeness. Landmarks are erased, inverted or replaced with new and unidentified features.

Throughout Wake, Crumm weaves together the visual languages of reflection, layering, and scale to complicate and disorient the landscape of her photographs, which she describes as “constructing a world that feels aligned with my experience of grief.”

For more than six decades it was an intimate celebrity hotspot — a small walk-up shop on London’s Oxford Street that offered no luxury goods, only a set of matchbook-sized portraits printed in ten minutes or less.

“Immigrants could be found in every corner of the Irish Free State at that time. It bucks the image we have of this dour, conservative society. It had conservative elements, but the 1920s were quite a globalised world.

I wanted to create imagery that moved away from the negative depictions of migration stories, without dismissing those realities, but instead to give another perspective through my grandfather’s story.

The photographers approach Ireland through long-form projects that consider themes such as environmental change, the relationship between people and place, and the cultural narratives embedded in the land.

Visiting a battlefield, whether in person or only through photographs, we are surely mistaken in thinking that old trees are wise, projecting onto them the qualities we might wish to find in our own aged selves, but at least trees have the virtue of not talking.
