Did you know Charles Dickens’ brother, Alfred, worked as a civil engineer on the construction of railway lines through Malton? Alfred Lamert Dickens became an engineer in the 1840s, working on the development of the York-Scarborough line in 1843 and the Malton-Driffield line, which opened in 1851.
