The Malton Museum Quiz is back! Join us on Thursday 13th November at 7:30 pm in the Milton Rooms for an evening of trivia. The quiz will include picture rounds, a music round, and plenty of general knowledge questions, including a couple surrounding the history of our town.

The Regency Era refers to the period 1811-1820, but Regency fashion extended beyond this, overlapping the late Georgian and early Victorian periods, 1795-1837. Georgian fashion was an elaborate display of elegance and wealth, featuring wide hooped skirts, fitted bodices and intricate details.

Today is World Architecture Day! 🏛️ Malton Museum is currently situated in the Subscription Rooms, where it first opened in 1935. The Subscription Rooms, however, have been around much longer, having been commissioned by the Fitzwilliam family and built during the Regency Era in 1814.

For our next Friends Lecture, Vic Jay will discuss his research on a group of pilots’ wartime experience on the Lancaster Bomber; they were known as the Mallon Crew. This biography explores how seven men volunteered for the Air Force, how chance brought them together, and what happened to them.

During the Georgian Era, race meetings were prevalent among the gentry. Horse racing flourished in Malton and Norton, with race meetings tracing back to the seventeenth century; these posters are just two of many from the Regency period, dating October 1817 and 1818, respectively.

Septimus Severus was born in what is now modern-day Libya in AD 145, and rose to power to become Roman Emperor in AD 193 after defeating his rivals. Comprised of 50,000 men, the emperor and his army set out to Britain in AD 208 as part of a Roman military establishment, leaving a mighty legacy.

Join us tomorrow for the ‘Beer and Brewing in Malton’ town tour 🍻 The tour commences outside the Milton Rooms at 3:30 pm and ends at Brass Castle, where you’re welcome to linger and taste Malton’s brewing history!

Brewing has been a key industry in Malton since the mid-18th century, with Rose’s and Russell’s being the two main breweries in town. Rose’s was founded in 1767 by Charles Rose and operated in The Old Brewery in Castlegate. Meanwhile, The Derwent Brewery, founded by James Russell, opened in 1771.

Did you know Daniel Defoe visited Malton during his tour of Britain in the 1720s? He narrates that ‘This Town is divided into two Parts, by the River, which are called Old and New Malton…The Town is well-built and inhabited, and has two well-supplied weekly Markets, which are held by Prescription;

“Richard III Yorkshire, Hero or Tyrant?” Richard III was a notorious Yorkist king in the fifteenth century, whose reign concluded when he was killed in the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, which subsequently resulted in the end of the Plantagenet dynasty and the commencement of the Tudor era.

Following the death of Oliver Cromwell and the restoration of the monarchy in the 1660s, horse racing was revived after being banned under the protectorate of Cromwell. Sir William Strickland arrived in Malton in 1684 and commenced the long association with the racing industry.
