Look, a hornet! Or is it? Batesian mimcry is when a harmless species evolves to look like one that’s well defended. This fly cannot sting, but its appearance might scare away a predator. Broad-banded Hornet Fly (Spilomyia alcimus) PA 🌿

Being up in DC reminds me that most of the US doesn’t get year-round access to gorgeous insects like we do in the deep southern US. Here’s a Fraternal Potter Wasp, Eumenes fraternus, gathering some nutrients before sunset last weekend.
