At Night White Bracken is a fabulous read, cosmic horror at its best. Honoured to do the cover art for this, as well as for Gareth’s next novel, To Those From Below, COMING SOON, and one to watch out for. Reminds me of Stephen King. Horrifying & brilliantly inventive.

Just finished writing the latest novel, ‘Born of Blackened Walls.’ The longest book in a while and one i’m extremely proud of. Just under six months to write, 92k words, I’ll let it percolate for a month or so, then get to editing. Next up, ‘The Midnight District’.

Ever since the first time i heard it, over twenty years ago now, i’ve always thought the horn solo in this is simply one of the most beautiful sounds in existence. Melancholic to euphoric, sombre into celebration, poignant throughout. Hubbard was the man.

Stoked to announce i’ll be taking part in Burnley Words Festival 2025. Along with a reading, i’ll be leading a session on ‘getting the novel written’, talking a little about working-class voices in genre literature and other assorted yammering. 17/05/25.

I began work on the first draft of my latest novel, ‘Of Blackened Walls’ three weeks ago and, to even my surprise, i’ve just hit 28k words. Like it was with ‘At Night, White Bracken’, I seemed to see the story all at once and it’s now about shading the silhouettes.

I was having lunch with my incredible wife when, to our horror, the table began to mimic her. It began as homage, but quickly turned sinister.

Despite losing something due to typically shithouse (and needless) CGI, ‘The Monkey’ was great macabre fun. More than anything, it had a unique atmosphere, which was enjoyable to inhabit for 98mins.

A pint, then off to watch ‘The Monkey’. Not a bad Friday afternoon. Caught ‘Conclave’ last night too. Worthy of the plaudits. Excellently performed, tension in spades, beautifully shot with a fantastic score. Ultimately, a subject matter i wouldn’t be interested in was utterly compelling.

I’m extremely grateful for all of the reviews for ‘At Night, White Bracken’ so far. The points made, the aspects people have enjoyed, the fact that readers have taken time out of their day to publish their feelings on the book, it means a great deal to me. The Undertundra is sated… For now.

There’s a lot of them but, for me, this is the best of Burroughs’ musical collaborations. Frisell’s playing feels like the perfect accompaniment, with single, discordant notes acting as exclamation points.

So far, ‘Swan Song’ is one incredible book. Worthy of its reputation, amongst the brilliant aspects of the novel, i’m most impressed at how McCammon builds such personal stories within a universally enormous occurrence. Beautiful, concise prose too. A future reread is guaranteed.

This little trip to London is full with some wicked stuff. Frank Black ‘Teenager of the Year’ gig at The Palladium tonight. ‘Mulholland Drive’ on 35mm at The Prince Charles tomorrow lunchtime, then beers in the Bermondsey arches in the evening. Obscene enjoyments.
