This just showcase to me that the 3DS version is absolutely going to be the definitive experience. The pacing for the opening is longer but it doesn't feel nearly as awkward.

The game only gets better from here thankfully, but it does make me worried for how they're treating the cut content.

There had to be a better way to do this opening, man. Instead, it feels like they took the worst parts of the opening and put them together haphazardly. Thankfully, it only goes up from here, but I wouldn't be surprised if people dropped the game at the beginning.

Okay, at Ballymolly. Overall, the beginning is arguably the most awkwardly-paced DQ opening I've played. The puzzles feel all over the place and might as well be hallways, the character interactions feel scuffed due to the pacing, and it still felt longer than necessary.

The kept the fucking tour guide. It's so over. 😭

I love how Maribel randomly shows up. Because they trimmed so much of the fat with the beginning, her trialing us feels way more awkward. Lol

They threw the first combat battle in the middle of this because they knew how ass they made these puzzles and how they were implemented. Lololololol

It's so incredibly awkward how they mashed up these puzzles. Worst fear unlocked. You have the whole cutscene of your father leaving only for him to be back like 10 minutes later? And then they awkwardly mashed the shrine puzzle into a new area but got rid of the gnome. 😭

I think it feels kind of bad here because the 3DS and PS1 version clearly had this padding issue but I think the pacing of the 3DS version is a bit better here because you naturally discover the ring doesn't work, the Sizzling Stone is lacking and then the ancient tome reveals more info.

I can understand the ring not working still being kept but what is the point of the ancient tome and fragment being available first hand. We still have to go on the fetch quest to get the other pieces anyways. Say what you want about the 3DS version but the quest itself WAS the reward.

Scratch that, Kiefer has a piece of the world puzzle but he stole the ring still??? Okay, I'm really not a fan of this change in particular because the ring subplot showcases Kiefer being reckless and wrong. Lol Kiefer getting the piece on his first try completely destroys that.

They definitely reduced the size of the areas. Pilchard Bay isn't nearly as big compared to the 3DS version and getting to the castle is basically a short walk. It's so funny you have this market for something 2 feet away? Lol

The UI is something I need to get used to for DQ. It fits with the game and works well enough though.

My complaints about the art direction hasn't changed, btw. The cutscenes look good, but the environments look so drab. Especially compared to the 3DS and PS1 versions. It's so bad that even on my Steam Deck OLED, the colors are so washed out.
