February 12, 1965. A tractor dealership announces itself on Lyon Street and you can almost hear the future rumbling in. Fast forward sixty-one years. The tractors may have changed. The equipment may have evolved. But the name? Today, Norgate lives on as Norgate Autobody at 615 1st Avenue

February 9, 1931. Prince George officially opened its ski jump on Connaught Hill. Ninety-five winters ago, Connaught Hill wasn’t just a lookout or a sledding spot. The newly built ski jump and toboggan slide opened with purpose — hosting the Western Canadian Ski Championships and Olympic trials.

September 25, 1915. South Fort George. “Mr. and Mrs. Alex Moffat are rejoicing over the birth of a son.” Just a few lines in the Prince George Herald. No fanfare. No future titles. Just a newborn described as “the stranger” who arrived that morning. That baby grew up to be Harold Moffat

July 1982 we were coming home from practice, going from Ahbu to Lyon a car ran the red light going down 5th to downtown.I saw Cal who was a big guy standing over me in the hospital asking if I was ok. So this week when I learned of his passing I remember his kindness, & I know we lost a good man.

On January 16, 1938, a five-seat Waco cabin biplane touched down, marking the first scheduled passenger air service linking Prince George with Vancouver. The plane had taken off from Ashcroft at 9:30 a.m., stopping through Williams Lake and Quesnel before arriving in Prince George at 12:19 p.m.

Tucked along Third Avenue, Bi-Rite Market was one of those places that quietly became part of the routine in mid-century Prince George. The kind of store you didn’t plan a trip to — you just went. Milk, bread, fresh produce, cooked and cured meats. Whatever supper needed, Bi-Rite had it.

Back in 1978, this newspaper ad announced a second Boston Pizza location opening close to Spruceland Theatre. It’s still where you go after the show. Still the place where birthdays happen, teams squeeze into booths, and someone always says, “let’s just go to BP.”

January 6, 1958. The new police detachment brought everything under one roof for the first time. Until then, officers had been spread out, with some working from the old Salvation Army building, which doubled as a hostel.

The headline showed up on January 5, 1950 — Prince George 57 below At one point, they had to stop fighting the fire just to fight the cold. The paper says two men spent nearly two hours thawing a single nozzle so it could be used again. Two hours. Just to get water flowing.

The 1st year I played hockey we all had different unifroms, it was the first minor hockey girls team in town. And then years later with Quesnel.Those leather pads never did get lighter but I am still proud I was there and proud I added to the legacy of women's hockey in Northern BC #alwaysbecreating

In early Jan 1969, Prince George reported a strange, glowing orange object moving slowly through the winter sky. Witnesses watched it along 5th Ave, in the area of Alward and Burden and later between Watrous and Carney. Others reported seeing it near Johnson.

By the time Northern Hardware wished Prince George a “Bright & Prosperous New Year,” the business was already firmly rooted here. Founded in 1919 by Alex Moffat and partner Frank Whitmore after buying out the Northern Lumber Company, Northern Hardware wasn’t new, flashy, or trying to prove itself.

December 30 has been busy around here before. Very busy. On December 30, 1911, South Fort George hosted its very first wedding. Mr. P.G.B. Bodeker and Miss Lutie E. Brady tied the knot, officially kicking off married life in a town that was still figuring out where its streets would land.

December 29, 1976. The Elkscentre opened its doors on Heather Road, and Prince George gained more than just another rink — it gained a front-row seat to decades of community life. Since that first scrape of fresh blades, the Elkscentre has seen it all.
