Why are numbers rising? —> More aggression in society overall (political climate worse) —> Post-pandemic visitor rules looser, increasing risks —> Attacks are still underreported: most don’t report verbal abuse —> Laws exist but aren’t always enforced (no federal law: some states do have laws)

Many who should not own firearms are able to do so & fewer consequences if they are used. —> More weapons in hospitals—many don’t have metal detectors —> Healthcare violence is still normalized: “just part of the job” —> Even when laws exist, hospitals rarely press charges

More mental health & substance use crises —> EDs aren’t built for long term psych care —> More patients with symptoms of agitation, withdrawal, & unpredictable behavior

Why is this happening? There are many reasons, but here are a few. Overcrowded, understaffed hospitals: —> Longer wait times = more frustration —> Healthcare workers are stretched thin, burnout is high —> Patients + families take out anger on staff

Violence Against Healthcare Workers is Out of Control This week alone: 🔴 ER doc stabbed in the chest. 🔴 ICU shooter killed multiple staff. 🔴 Nurse beaten, now on ventilator. Hospitals shouldn’t be war zones. It’s STILL a crime to attack healthcare workers. Be safe out there. #EMsky #MedSky
