TO ALSO NOTE: it’s not like white kids were the only people reading Disney comics. Comics were a cheap, easily shared and mass produced entertainment. EVERYONE had access to them. Being a minority in 1950s America, reading comics, you’d have the gut wrenching effect of seeing depictions like this.

Btw any Donald Duck fan worth their salt should read this book, you have to engage with literature that critiques your hyperfixation 👀

It’s kinda uncomfortable to see what was considered an OK gag sometimes in Disney comics. For as brilliant as Carl Barks and Floyd Gottfredson was.. imagine being Hispanic, black, and enjoying a Mickey or Donald comic, and seeing MASSIVE racial depictions suddenly.

Bacially almost all the major black and white characters were born out of homages to minstrelsy. I talk about this in my Character Design classes actually
