Bluebell wood walk. You don't find bluebells in the fens (because they were under water until the late 17th century), but it was worth the 30-minute drive to our nearest stand of ancient woodland at Woodditton.

I saw a water rat but it swam away, dammit.

The rhubarb is already big enough to make a cosy den.

The now traditional Easter beach walk/run/scamper, complete with ball games with the young one, seals (I was so good! I didn't bark!) and ice cream.

The farmer must be REALLY fed up with people fly-tipping up this drove.

Can we stay out on this walk just a little longer? Pretty please?

I really don't enjoy walks when it's as windy as today. It takes cheese as well as encouragement to make it worth my while.

The world is a desperate place right now. But the big Fenland skies are still beautiful.

16ºC (60ºF) today, and it's still February.

So much rain this winter, so much water in the Washes. But after last summer's drought the reservoirs are still lower than they should be, even now.

Winter in the fens: much mud and many swans.

If you build a barn in the fens, peat shrinkage and subsidence means it's bound to start falling apart before too long. On the positive side, I bet there are lots of small animals living in these cracks.

Caught three fieldmice and a shrew today. I think that's my all-time best for a single walk so far.

There were a few fen skaters out at Upware this morning, making the most of the brief cold snap. I wasn't allowed to join them because I was getting a bit overexcited, but did try my paws on the ice in the next meadow.
