Castle Street, 1880s and 2025 With St George's Church on the left - opened 1726 and demolished around 1899, It could be earlier than 1880s I think. If anyone has read 'Her Benny', published in 1879, this church was mentioned a few times and was where the girl used to sell matches, I think.

Netherfield Road South, 1910s and 2025 Ann Fowler's, originally a Welsh Chapel in Everton, became a Salvation Army hostel for women in 1907. It served as a refuge for homeless and vulnerable women. Eventually demolished in the late 1970s due to disrepair and the need for urban redevelopment.

Aha! This is the first time I've been able to understand how those steps came to exist, from other angles it makes no sense but you can see here how the end of Elliot St was an incline that they've then levelled and the steps join it back to Lime St - been pondering that for years!

Yet again, I'm amazed to see that postwar buildings I thought were built on bomb sites had in fact replaced Victorian buildings that survived the war in good order. Shucks.
