The appeal of IT is that it's ALL the monsters. It's EVERYTHING in the darkness. If we downplay that and just make it a clown that sometimes turns into other things, then it just loses something essential. Give me the damn spider!

I get that the book was written in the 80's, when clowns were still usually non-ironic. I get that today, clowns are considered a type of monster on their own. But if we lean into that, then what's the damn point of the shapeshifting bogeyman defaulting to a clown at all?

The point is that we're seeing IT's true form now. And yes, I get that the lights themselves are exactly that. But it's just missing something, y'know? The clown form is a lure. IT is not, itself, a clown. Why maintain it when turning into a kaiju to crush everyone?

Well, finally saw IT: Chapter 2. Idk if this is as hot a take as some people make it sound, but I did not like drider-Pennywise. I wanted a spider monster! I get that the climax of a film is going to have to be different from the metaphysical battle book. But it still feels watered down.

The problem with basing a character's design off a puritan is that the end result has the fashion sense of a puritan.

Considering making the matriarch lowkey genderfluid, but idk. OOH, "genderqueer killer" is a trope with a lot of fucked up baggage. OTOH, I'm a trans girl, I can probably approach it in a tasteful manner. OTOOH, even when "done well", a shitty trope can grind your gears when you're sick of it.

Super rough concepts. Deformed, sympathetic brute. Needy yandere. Feeble grandpa whose wisdom is always horribly misinterpreted. Godly matron who takes care of them all. Violent patriarch who's actually long dead and whose identity has been adopted by his widow. Might come up with more.

The enabling kinks would be bondage, yandere, cannibalism, teratophilia, noncon, and the general eroticism inherent to toku-battling horror figures.

Maybe they wander the surrounding area, unwilling to accept the passage of time, murdering everyone within what they deem to be their property line. Because each manifestation is just the next day to them, and they can't handle the rapid change.

Thinking, atm, about a family of puritan-inspired isolationists whose mansion was buried by flood and now rises periodically from the waters every decade or so. The members are all ghostly manifestations, so they're unkillable and may have themed powers, to keep up with our heroines.

Another hurdle is that slasher horror is rooted in grittiness, primal fear and the evils of our fellow man. But my protagonists, individually, would utterly obliterate most slashers. Adding a supernatural element is non-negotiable. The trick is doing so without losing the genre in the process.
