Starting 2025 with book, including anticipated novels by a couple local authors (Alam and Barnhill), a novel I've been looking forward to since I first heard about it (LaValle), a highly recommended play series (Schenkkan), and two craft/pedagogy books (Ball and Germano/Nicholls).

Y'all, I'm all about black coffee (every day, all day!*), but made myself a little fancy sweet thang this morning. Give yourself a sweet thang every once in a while. *except after noon because it interferes with my beauty rest ๐

As I continue to spread the word about my new chapbook, Cold Is Cold Is Cold, here's one of the included poems, "The Private Version," which originally appeared in Emerge Literary Journal. Consider ordering a copy of Cold Is Cold Is Cold!

"The trick to begin writing deeply impactful, meaningful nonfiction is to stop telling yourself your story doesnโt matterโthat your connection to the wider world is too distant and abstract to be relevant. Trust that urgency and write it well, and you can make that care contagious." ~ Amy Butcher

Thanatos-on-the-Shelf is resurrected for this brief review of John Warner's Why They Can't Write (2018), an excellent book that all teachers--especially writing teachers--should read, even solely to reinforce why the 5-paragraph essay is trash (and detrimental to learning). Highly recommended!

Years ago, I wrote a lot about sports but didn't really hold to it. A few years ago, I started again, although really about memory. Lately I've been thinking about tackling it again, as I've been getting out to live games (mostly Timberwolves). It's liberating to enjoy sports again

It's early on a Saturday morning, my kids are still sleeping, I'm not going to work, so what do I do? Drink excessive amounts of coffee and read about the importance of metacognition in first-year college writing. Of course.
