I feel like just about any non-Hasbro #ttrpg has an advantage when scoring for this jam: itch.io/jam/fuck-cap... What if endless hours of deeply enriching entertainment for a single one-time purchase? Slow local consumption that lightly induces other people to also make a purchase eventually.

Solutionism has its limits, but it can at least retro-fit corrections. Hands with six fingers? Fixed. Em dashes? Gone. If you can pin them down for something specific, no you can't. The gelatinous cube just keeps moving down the corridor.

I'm surprised by my current top 5 solo boardgames: Hadrian's Wall Railroad Ink Hostage Negotiator Under Falling Skies Spirit Island Turns out that fiddliness is huge when playing by yourself. For me, no amount of theme can save a game where you're forced to remember a ton of motions.

One reason why #dndisnotforme is how this amorphous blob sucks out all the energy in the room. We never had a single D&D before or after its first publication. The ambiguity of being all things to all people is part of the popularity and yet that's not even a stated goal. You can't pin it down.

I've previously called out "narrative" #ttrpg as an adjective that carries no clear meaning to me. If you mean rules-light, you can maybe say that instead? Otherwise, I do recognise story as a common creative agenda, one reason why people do play TTRPGs.

While i do genuinely enjoy the Fate #TTRPG system, that certainly doesn't mean that i dont have my issues with it. The system feels like its almost contradictory at times, and we've had a surprising amount of rulings in the past where the book effectively went "idk figure it out"

So what is the next fantasy cultural icon after Lord of the Rings and World of Warcraft? Did Game of Thrones grabbed enough attention?

Why is it so uncommon to find RPGs that actually give recommended player counts? Is this an oversight? Are we assuming the size of the average RPG group? It seems shocking to me to not include the number or range of people the game is designed for.

A simulation is a steady continuous reality following the arrow of time without skipping a beat. Once this is no longer linear, you speed things up, slow them down, or skip a moment in favor of another, two things happened: somebody decided that and you're now constructing a narrative. #ttrpg

The fluidity we find in boardgames or videogames often isn't there for role-playing games. It's taken as a selling point that you just show up, somebody runs it for you, and you don't need to learn anything. Or you learn one thing and that's it for your whole life. #ttrpg #dndisnotforme

One of the things that I'm proud of in Sword Opera is: we took what in Blades or FitD games would be Downtime actions and turned them into Vignettes which occur during the main phase of play. You use Vignettes to heal, train, mend, etc.,and they come with some narration. It lets the story breathe.

Thinking of #ttrpg rules as proposed expectations shared explicitly by a group. These can come from mechanics, but also from the setting. Anything in the books or from online resources. A player can also make a specific interpretation or offer a new rule. All of these interact through play.

Given the red elephant in the #ttrpg room and how that corporation abandoned game design since 4E, a consequence of everyone getting 5E-brained is thinking of TTRPGs as a solved problem and dispensing with game design all together. If you're not restating #dnd, it's seen as a lesser form of TTRPG.

By keeping an eye on #ttrpg posts for the #dndisnotforme feed, I sometimes catch posts that harbour some resentment against TTRPGs. Our hobby usually demands a lot of time and energy and it negotiates poorly around that. Is having the GM do everything and maybe pay that person the best we can do?

Moving past the shadow of the D&Ds, the dynamics of GM burnout or the spotlights of live play, our #ttrpg hobby is actually quite horizontal. It engages with a lot of different skills and it's quite local to however each group organises itself. We're spread so thin that we become invisible.
