One of the things that I'm proud of in Sword Opera is: we took what in Blades or FitD games would be Downtime actions and turned them into Vignettes which occur during the main phase of play. You use Vignettes to heal, train, mend, etc.,and they come with some narration. It lets the story breathe.

Thinking of #ttrpg rules as proposed expectations shared explicitly by a group. These can come from mechanics, but also from the setting. Anything in the books or from online resources. A player can also make a specific interpretation or offer a new rule. All of these interact through play.

Given the red elephant in the #ttrpg room and how that corporation abandoned game design since 4E, a consequence of everyone getting 5E-brained is thinking of TTRPGs as a solved problem and dispensing with game design all together. If you're not restating #dnd, it's seen as a lesser form of TTRPG.

By keeping an eye on #ttrpg posts for the #dndisnotforme feed, I sometimes catch posts that harbour some resentment against TTRPGs. Our hobby usually demands a lot of time and energy and it negotiates poorly around that. Is having the GM do everything and maybe pay that person the best we can do?

Moving past the shadow of the D&Ds, the dynamics of GM burnout or the spotlights of live play, our #ttrpg hobby is actually quite horizontal. It engages with a lot of different skills and it's quite local to however each group organises itself. We're spread so thin that we become invisible.

Stop. Look deep into your core. Why do you play #ttrpg ?

People want to believe they're getting a good thing from a popular brand because that success is gained through competition. It's more convenient to ignore how it's just based on money making more money by snuffing out any real competition. #dndisnotforme

Maybe the best way to criticise a #ttrpg is to make one yourself. But what motivates critique in our hobby? To pick between different games is probably the least frequent motivation. To co-opt something from other games may be more represented since the majority only plays one popular game.

People questioning if #ttrpg should have double Ts 🤔 Meanwhile in 🇵🇹 we can't even agree on how to say RPGs (an unfortunate "it's pronounced GIF" situation). Anyway, we lost the SEO wars and were kicked out of RPG when we were here first. Now we ourselves have done the same internally to AP.

I like making a particular character for a particular group playing a particular game. That way I can be open to obvious ideas while still getting a unique experience. Doing it the other way around feels very clunky. Like you have to come up with something brilliant for the last #ttrpg of your life.

#Pluribus might be a good reference for the kind of #ttrpg worldbuilding I enjoy. Centred around protagonists in so much that the premise allows it. What's this all about? I don't know, you tell me. And protagonists aren't automatically those that weren't part of the joining. That's just people.

What's your favourite #ttrpg that leverages NOT having a backstory beyond what it can already provide for your character? Besides Dogs in the Vineyard. Or In a Wicked Age. Or Psi Run.

What's the role of urban fantasy in a world desperate for utopias? Can we reimagine city life without horror? What non-dystopian fiction can we speculate for the urban landscape?

Dice when? That probably sums up many challenges people have with learning different TTRPGs. They either reach for the dice too much or they avoid them like the plague. In fact, they find some way of #ttrpg playing that's on either side of this spectrum and cling to that, no matter the game.

Friendly reminder that actually played actual play became a thing way before performative actual play. And is still here. The fact that the second one is hugely more popular and obscures the first one should be familiar to tabletop roleplayers as we've already lost the word RPG to videogames.

Yazeba's Bed & Breakfast was a game that arrived at my house about three days before I had to pack up all my games for moving, so I never got to read it, until now. HOLY GUACAMOLE is this book good. It's a thing of astonishing depth, breadth, and detail. An incredible achievement. Outstandingly.

By not recognising "AI art" as something worthy of definition, I give myself the space to simply keep saying that art makes life worth living. Whoever says that humans are also just regurgitating their training set has no idea how art works. The power of conflicting values and embodied feelings.

I guess people can resent #pbta for explicitly stating when you should roll for something. Do they perhaps prefer a #trrpg that stays silent or ambiguous on the subject of when to roll? I prefer an explicit offer of gameplay, even if imperfect answers are given to questions I'm not so sure about.

The 2000s have established infinite ways of engaging with X without actually doing X. Even post-modernists would be surprised. Every trace of culture is forced to consider how far the real thing gets supplanted by their simulacra. The power of convenience, popularity and technology is overwhelming.

I was this close of writing "some moment in fictional time", but I know that opens up another semantic battle front. These same folks would even say that there is no fiction. But in traditional games it's often close to that thing you're waiting for the GM to describe.

Folks that recoil from having story in their #ttrpg may be unaware that every time you skip over some moment in time you've just made a narrative decision.
