Maybe we have always been this stupid and had just gotten lucky, despite ourselves. I mean, the mayor in Jaws was STILL MAYOR in Jaws 2. We consistently re-elect the same people, time after time. The names change, sure, but we ensure the status quo despite all our bitching that we want different.

It wasn’t so very long ago that any ONE of these things happening hourly out of this Administration would have been enough to sink the entire thing in disgrace. My question is: have we learned? Have we re-established vigilance and our uncrossable lines? Who ARE we, now?

While it’s basically a full time job continually listing the torrent of criminal and immoral shit coming out of this Presidency, the Dems should spend a little effort saying how they would be better and different. There are still too many voters who condemn both parties as equally terrible.

I don’t know why conservatives pretend to be anti-drugs. Not only are drugs pure free market capitalism, but it disproportionately harms the poor classes while enriching the wealthy. On paper, it all sounds right up their alley.

It breaks my heart to see the Left change so much over the years. A big advantage the Left had was a much more intelligent and relaxed sense of humor, which, sadly, they’ve completely abandoned. I have watched us descend into prissy scolds and become as dour as any moral crusaders on the Right.

The GOP is openly kidnapping and disappearing people and calling for the violent murder of any who oppose them. The Dems are still calling for calm compromise and decorum, uneasy with the impolite words to use.

If this nation had any sense, that’s exactly what it would do, with no hesitation. Yet half the people would fight viciously to DEFEND the grift and gouging as somehow righteous and admirable.

The scandals and corruption of the Trump regime make Watergate, Iran-Contra and Teapot Dome look hilariously quaint, yet this country simply has no moral fortitude or coherent character to address it. Trump has exposed a deep rot in our national fiber and sense of ethical integrity.

The Epstein bill will simply languish and expire on his desk.

Mitch McConnell was worth tens of millions at the beginning of Trump’s first term. By the end, he was worth hundreds. None of them think Trump is awesome. But, they will ride his Presidency to extreme wealth. No appeal to morality, decency or statecraft makes any damn difference to them.

It’s unlikely ANY of these Congresspeople have ever been on SNAP, ever had to make a budget, used a can opener, worked overtime, wrote a check for a bill, pumped gas, been fired, applied with a resume, etc. America’s infatuation with aristocratic leadership is having serious consequences.

I get that there is a lot of valid criticism of Dems, but it certainly seems that they were the ONLY moderating force that kept this country functional. America saw fit to give the GOP total control of all three branches of government & the majority of state governorships. Nice experiment so far.

In bygone eras, shame and embarrassment were normal tools that helped shape behavior. From school kids to politicians to corporations, there was a general sense of what was “acceptable”, and in boundaries. Has our mania for never acknowledging shame had a detrimental effect on modern society?
