Blink and you might have missed it. Erroll Southers, a controversial appointment to the LAPD commission, was approved by the LA City Council today. But it was done in an unusual way -- it was allowed to run out the clock by the council failing to do anything by today's deadline to act on.

Things got heated between two of the candidates vying for state Senator Maria Elena Durazo's seat. Maebe Pudlo calls on opponent Sara Hernandez to "adamantly reject" money from donors tied to AIPAC, but Hernandez says her campaign isn't AIPAC-funded.

Mayor Bass has now confirmed in a statement that she asked that SB 423, which would cap the Measure ULA "mansion tax," be continued so that it can be reintroduced in January. The tax has been a source of funding for affordable housing, and programs to protect tenants.

I've been hearing the author of the legislation might be pulling this bill. The United to House LA coalition also just sent out a press release saying the bills has been pulled and won't be reintroduced this session.

Howard Jarvis's president told the LA Times this was a "lame effort" to go after their ballot proposal. Former Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg (who Mayor Bass tapped for this deal) hoped it would discourage business leaders from backing the initiative. www.latimes.com/california/s...

There's a provision in this new language -- targeting Measure ULA -- that says the proposed changes wouldn't go into effect if passed, as long as the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Assn. withdraws its "Local Taxpayer Protection Act" initiative.
