S02E22 - Dr. Leslie Laud - Implementation Science Meets Writing Instruction: ThinkSRSD's Journey to Scalability and Impact - Learning with Mr. Lee
In this episode, Brendan Lee speaks with Dr. Leslie Laud. She is the founding Director of ThinkSRSD, a writing program built upon Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD). The discussion covers ThinkSRSD's key strategies, including mnemonics and how to apply them across different grade levels and writing genres. Furthermore, Dr. Laud addresses implementation challenges and provides advice for teachers, emphasising a gradual release of responsibility, the significance of teacher collaboration and the need for professional development that respects teachers' unique contexts.

I am loving this blog post today. "Our “rigorous” lesson plans weren’t just rigorous – they were skipping crucial steps in language development and comprehension." I see this everyday in classrooms.

CKLA would be so much better if they incorporated writing instruction such as ThinkSRSD. As a tutor, I use CKLA and CKHG texts within the ThinkSRSD framework. We develop knowledge by developing our analytical skills and learning how to express new understandings = structured writing every day.

The big ThinkSRSD thread, Fall 2024, as told by my students. -I remember really struggling when writing the pre-assessment. I was in a perpetual state of writer's block. Now my writing flows much more naturally, because I have learned that academic writing depends a lot on a pre-writing plan.

Beautiful study! Teaching students to be Brave Spellers by learning how to use phonetic spelling (or invented) raises so many literacy outcomes. Also just sounds fun!

Starting our thinkSRSD journey in Limestone. We have a small pilot project of 30 educators from across 19 schools in our district working to bring the thinkSRSD approach into our schools and classrooms. We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning!

Take notes and make organizers by hand! (Ok to draft via keyboarding). Students don’t just memorize better by hand but learn better overall writing by hand. Writing is learning.
